It's a bullshít column about a bullshít rumour and I say shame on Register and OC Workbench for postig the story.

They should've run some Durons WITHOUT HSFs to see if they turned purple.

I have.

They do not change color.

Also, I have received Durons DIRECTLY FROM AMD that were purple, and these CPUs were mixed in with CPUs that had green dies FROM THE SAME LOT on THE SAME TRAY in the SAME BOX.

Furthermore, the thread that is linked in the "story" shows a comment on how there would never be copper Durons. I'm sorry, but how does this explain the blue (not purple) Durons? I'm not saying that blue dies are copper, but everyone else does!

The whole thing holds about as much water as the "missing pin" rumor. Look how that turned out. Instead of missing pins, we got missing L1 bridges! Ha ha ha!! People will believe anything someone slaps up on the internet!

DURON'S DIE DOES CHANGE COLOR AFTER HEAT AND USING THERMAL PASTE

I have a duron 650 a while back and it's green, but after about 1 week,
when I take it out, I notice the color of the die changed..to partialy green and partialy purple.....this has been confirmed that thermal paste and heat will change color on duron's die.....

AND FUTHER MORE.....THERE ARE NO COPPER DURON!!..THRE ARE ONLY BLUE DURON

I was at local computer show last weekend and I noticed there are a lot of the blue duron..most of them are week 29 and later..they sure look like copper..but if you compare them side by side with real copper t-bird,
you will see they still looks different when you let the light reflects on them at different angels!! and my friend bought a week34 blue duron and that one can only oc to "800"MHz stable!! while pcnut said almost all of their copper t-bird can oc to 1050 or beyond!!

there are no copper duron..the reason those duron looks like copper is b/c the color of the material used around the die is blue..or the same as the copper t-bird..but they still are green inside..

Thank you for TOTALLY missing my point....

STRAIGHT FROM THE FACTORY I have BRAND NEW NEVER RUN DURONS that are BLUE, that are GREEN and are PURPLE and some with GREEN WITH PURPLE DOTS. I never said that ANY were COPPER despite the obvious color differences.

FURTHERMORE, I ran a DRY Duron and it did not change colors. I can understand that HOT thermal grease can cause a chemical reaction with the resin that can change it's color, but then you would be implying that these folks in Taiwan are APPLYING THERMAL GREASE TO GREEN CPUS AND FIRING THEM UP JUST LONG ENOUGH TO CHANGE THEIR COLOR BUT NOT KILL THEM.

This is what you're saying, right? I just won't believe that.

Don't flame me for this but I think I read a quote at HardOCP from someone at AMD that said the color was caused by the polishing agent used at the factory. They were using a different agent at FAB25 and FAB30 therefore the different color. If this is true then if they used the other agent at the other factory then the color would change. Just a thought.

jonnyGURU,

my post is not directed at you...and I agree with your point of view that it's impossible to BURN A DURON W/O HSF AND LET IT CHANGE COLOR...first, there are no way to prove it will actually work, and second, it's hard to imagine it will not fried the cpu...

I just want to point out to those who still believe there are copper duron and prevent someone from been ripped off...

IT'S GREAT FOR YOU TO CONFIRM THAT THERE ARE VARIOUS COLORS OF DURON FROM THE SAME LOT/SAME TRAY/SAME SHIPMENT...

there..end of discussion..^^
THERE ARE NO COPPER DURON!! SO..DON'T GET FOOLED!!

Maybe the packaging controller's kid at AMD decided to test his artistic talents on your chip. LOL (No offense)

WetSprocket: You are dead on. No flame, bro. It's all in the polish. NOT in the composition of the die or the temerature the die has exceeded. I asked Kyle to email me a link to that old post when Steve@hardocp.com made the decision to post the Purple die link as news, although he was sort of poking fun at the whole concept with the link.

PilotronX: Yes, I have seen them yellow too. Actually, kind of a goldish color. The really cool looking ones are the ones with the purple AND gold swirled in them. That's neat!

sleepdragon: OK. It was hard to see where you were coming from with the "thermal paste and heat will change color on duron's die" statement.

Yes, "THERE ARE VARIOUS COLORS OF DURON FROM THE SAME LOT/SAME TRAY/SAME SHIPMENT" and that's that.

The news is not news and it's a rumor getting attention when it shouldn't be.
