no kidding it's not the government. the government has been plugged in and taking anything it wants for years. check out the news some time :p

these guys are after credit cards, bank accounts, nude celebrity selfies, valid email addresses, password to be added to their lists, maybe even newscorp altering a victim's voicemail.

where's the fcc on this? well, their position is "it's against the law". have a nice day.

Or these scam companies can just do the same thing as the ISPs did for getting rid of net neutrality and lobby to get the FCC to let them do it. The FCC does not seem to be on the people's side anymore.

the last time the fcc was on the people's side was mandating all tv stations use the same format signal so you didn't have to buy a separate tv for each station (1940-41). since then, no lube.

You have to admit it would make a great additional perimeter alarm for a military base. Make a white list of allowed phones. Alert on any unknown phone ping that gets too close.

"...have turned up near the White House and Senate. A company that specializes in selling secure mobile phones discovered the existence"

Of course. The company that sells $3000 last generation Samsung's with a custom OS skin just happens to "Discover" "Towers" next to a bunch of tech incompetent old white dudes who are in charge of spending other peoples money. No conflict of interest or opportunism there...

Another company looking for press. It would be no different than if you or I went around looking for fake WiFi hotspots, and just happened to be promoting "SafeWiFi Guard 3000".

I would like to see more reputable sources reporting on this.

No company is going to put up fake towers which cost a lot of money. Then use them in illegal and nefarious ways risking getting huge fines and closed down by the FCC.

Seriously the government owns them. You really think the government doesn't have towers all over for their own purposes? You think they need to register these towers even and have them on the books some place? Come on. They do millions of underground secret work constantly. I'm sure they have their own towers for whatever reason.

The way it's regulated for cell towers you can't find who really owns them, plus they are saying these could be a suit case or just a laptop with a dongle.

It's just the Chinese spying on officer's wives to pick up troop movements and any secrets. Also to see who they can blackmail
