I'd hate to be a party pooper, but getting a preferential treatment because he has down syndrome wasn't glorious.

They just gave him a 'gimme' because he is handicapped. He and his family shouldn't be too thrilled about it?

I can't find the popular commercial now made by the down syndrome group or whatever. It showed a prep cook in the kitchen getting yelled at by the head chef. Then after the head chef leaves, the prep cook cracks a little smile. The viewers realize he has down syndrome and he was happy because he wasn't treated differently.

I agree, but he's a kid. He got out there and fucking played. They didn't put him on a special team. They just gave him one basket. You shouldn't treat disabled people specially, but you can give a kid a break every now and then.

I agree. I guess its ok because the crowd and everyone seemed to go along with it, so good for them. But if I was a player I think I'd be competitive enough to wonder why my game was being ruined for this kids sake. There is a time and a place to make him feel special I don't think you necessarily have to interrupt a basketball game.

I'm not familiar with his disability, so maybe it comes down to lack of mental capacity, but it doesn't indicate a love of the game to me that you'd want to go in at the end of the game and be a liability to your team (repeated passes trying to get you a score). That goes against what a team sport is all about.

I guess I just don't like things in general where you have to go along with someones desire to feel good about themselves (in this case, the coach of the team) or be treated like an asshole. I'm sure some kids on that team don't really give a shit but just go along with it

It's a fucking game- as in- has zero bearing on their well being or future.

One out of hundreds these kids will play. They can sacrifice one single GAME to do something special for that poor kid to remember for the rest of his life.

If anything what it did do for these kids is give them a damn good life lesson on compassion and caring for your fellow man, which is way more important than a fucking basketball GAME. Apparently it worked from seeing the other team helping out. When did playing a GAME become higher up on the list than caring for the weak and unfortunate?

Good job to the both of you for ruining a faith in humanity thread, you troll well. Faith in humanity revoked.

How old are you? Nice emotional knee-jerk reaction to my legitimate argument that the down syndrome group AGREES with.

I have no problem with what happened in that vid. But it made me cringe a little how everyone put on a big show just to make him happy because "hey you are handicapped and this is your day!"

Does he speak for all people with down syndrome? Some are truly determined and don't want a freebie. They compete like mofos in special olympics.

Who's trolling here? Who revoked the 'faith in humanity'?

The adults are talking now. You take your little Futurama meme back to reddit or 4chan.

Lots of things in life are meaningless if you are cynical about it. There are entire industries, careers, etc. that could be put on the same level as "game." Just about anything that doesn't lead to putting food in your mouth or curing your sicknesses is on the same level as basketball.

When I was a kid I spent most of my free time at a basketball hoop, practicing. I was usually the best player on my team. I took a lot of pride in that. I learned a lot about teamwork, and the importance of humility, as in how to act when you are a lot better than many others on a team.

Yes it's just a game. But a game isn't meaningless. It's a means to compete. Some people aren't competitive, and can throw their hands up and say 'well, it's just a game,' and those same people likely aren't the same people who are practicing every day. They probably aren't as good. And that's ok with them because after all, it's just a game.

But if I was on that team, and the coach, as he said he would, put in this kid to try to get him a basket if we were down by 2 with 30 seconds left.. yes I would be pissed. I would be pissed because I practiced every damn day and this kid, for whatever disabilities he has, obviously does not (or can not) love the game if he would risk his teams chances at winning for a selfish reason.

Note I don't want to criticize the kid as I'm not sure his mental capacity, but the coach is more to blame

Does he speak for all people with down syndrome? -- no where in the article did it say he spoke for anybody?? Are you jealous because you have Downs syndrome and are not given the same opportunities??

Some are truly determined and don't want a freebie. They compete like mofos in special olympics. -- and some get the opportunity regardless.....lice with it!!

For me personally, it's not about me getting mad at the kid & coach. The kid could use a pick-me-up in his spirits and it was heart warming to see everyone being happy for him.

My problem is for the kid himself. I mean, he only has down syndrome, yes? He must know they all just pandered down to him just because he's special. I don't know if I would like that if I had down syndrome. The cheering, the opponent passing me the ball, making the free basket, etc- all those are fake, despite their kind-hearted intentions.

If he didn't have the capacity to understand that it was a show (he knows), then what are we doing to him? Aren't they creating a distorted reality- 'hey you're handicapped so once in awhile we'll throw a bone to you'.

That's not healthy.

Zeze I guess my focus is more on the players and fans. I'm just not familiar enough with down syndrome people to know whether or not they can comprehend that they are being pandered to, how they feel about that, how it affects them, etc. My main thought is that you can take this example to extremes and get really ridiculous. Like wouldn't it be totally freaking awesome for some handicapped person to throw a touchdown in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl? Just a game right? WOW that would be awesome. But it's just not the time or place.. there is a time for serious competition and a time for feel good moments. Don't sour one with the other.

I'm not seeing how this is any different than putting the scrub seniors in for a few plays/minutes/whatever during their last home game of their season. That's something that basically everyone does in sports.

It's a sign of respect and thanks for dedication; not special treatment.

Right. As for this particular OP's video, it wasn't a game winning shot. The opponents still won.

Tell ya what. Why don't you ask that kid if he's happy he was treated differently for that game. Good grief.

Although I agree with the special treatment argument, that was just awesome and probably made his life right there... Its a moment he will never forget

I would real life rep the opposite player who sent him the ball, great stuff
