Check it out!!!!!!! :)

One thing to note, make sure you don't install the search toolbar.

From the fairuse website:

2.8
If you get an "adware" alert while installing, this is because the installer contains a search toolbar, which installation is optional.I set up this partnership in order to distribute the full edition for free, though this is still experimental.
I also would like to add that it is the FairUse installer that decides to install the toolbar or not, based on a checkbox. This means that nothing unwanted can be installed on a system without the end user's explicit consent.

Is it any better than Handbrake these days?

Huh, I didn't realize that handbrake was available for Windows. Man, I haven't been keeping up on this stuff.

I've never used Handbrake so I guess I couldn't say. I've been using Fairuse to backup my whole DVD collection so I can stream to my 360.

Well, versus handbrake, FairUse a bit simpler and makes much better use of my quad-core. I wish there were more intuitive options for resolution. It doesn't seem there's any decent way to choose an unresized, cropped resolution. For example: An anamorphic DVD at 2.4:1 aspect cropped 60 pixels from top and bottom would have a full resolution of 864x360. I'm going to have to mess around with it some more. One thing handbrake has over FairUse is input support of more file formats (especially the video_ts folder in my case).

I've used Fairuse now for quite some time and thanks for the update. I have the paid full version. One question about better use of quad core cpu's tho... I also use Handbrake and my quad core will scream to 60C on all 4 cores when I encode using that whereas Fairuse, although also using 4 cores, never raises my temps very much. Does it depend on the choices I make such as what encoder I am using?

The programs themselves shouldn't matter, that was an error on my part. I would think it should be the actual encoder which is doing all the work and making use of the cores. It's possible the two programs are using different versions of your chosen codec. I can't be sure though.

Gooberlx2.... well put. Yah I must be using something messed up. I just hate to go in and change my codec settings as then I will probably break something. One thing I note is that if I use x264 encoder for sure it will MAX out my cores... this I note in Handbrake. If I use DivX or Xvid then although all my 4 cores are used, they don't "seem" maxed out. I will have to play with this I guess :0 Thanks.

Just tested the new Fairuse and setting it to H264 and sure enough it cranks my CPU's to max just like Handbrake. I must have been smoking something before... this works very nice now... not sure if it's the 2.8 or me actually setting h264. All good now.

How does this compare to DVDFab and/or AVI.net?

I'm using DVDFab to make backup DVD copies and AVI.net to DivX encode to avi file. This program looks like it will do both?

Anyone having the fairuse error out with: "unable to transcode audio?"

Anything I try under PS3 mode bombs out with this message. :(

Some other people are having the same issue as well.

I don't know about AVI.net because I haven't used it but Fairuse can encode from a full DVD or an .ISO. So in theory yes you could skip a step there and encode directly from the DVD to avi.

Uncheck the delete intermediate files and it will work. I had the same error with encoding to the 360 preset setting.

Yeah I tried that already using ISO's, same result. :( I'll try this using a DVD now, thanks. :)

Where is this option? I don't see it on any of the screens.

Press the "options" button upon loading Fauruse, it's right at the bottom. You'll see what you need there.

On a related note, no matter what H.264 option I pick I STILL eventually get the "unable to transcode audio" error even when I have the "delete intermediate files" box checked.

It's happening with every DVD I've tried, as well as 4 different ISO's I had on one of my drives. Oh well.

Have you gotten it to work with Divx or any other option? Which audio are you using? I'm using Divx/AC3 to stream to my 360 and since I unchecked the delete intermediate files I haven't had any issues.

I've had the same issue with the "unable to transcode audio" when using the h264 and AC3 encoding. Do I have to install a special AC3 encoder codec to use this? I haven't really been able to find much help on this issue, and I too have had the "delete intermediate files" box unchecked or checked without a difference.
