Fairly simple setup question regarding connecting two wireless routers.

Okay,

So our home network is set up as follows:

DSL connection: 6 MBps DL, AT&T
DSL modem/wireless router: http://www.amazon.com/2Wire-18...roadband/dp/B000IEFG52"]2WIRE HomePortal 1800HG

The 2WIRE is far from reliable (ie. connection drops at least once per day) and not very customizable. I've been looking to replace it with a DD-WRT router for some time now (the one DD-WRT flashed router I did have no longer works, long story) to optimize connection speeds for certain programs, monitor bandwidth usage per month, etc.

Enter the ASUS WL-520gU, which is http://www.newegg.com/Product/...ckDeals-_-NA-_-NA-_-NA"]$29.99 and MIR and coupon at Newegg, which is known to be an excellent DD-WRT router.

I understand how to physically connect the ASUS to the 2WIRE modem, that isn't the problem. However, beyond that, to get the ASUS working, all I'd need to do is disable the 2WIRE's wireless (by logging in via IP address), plug in the ASUS, and then set it up from there ... right? I will defer to those who on this board who have more networking experience than I ... hopefully I'm not missing anything.

Thanks in advance!

There are two possible configurations:

1. The new router as an access point.
2. The new router as a router, 2wire as modem only.

For (1), see Jack's link on how to set up and connect a router as an access point.

For (2), see 2wire docs on how to disable routing / configure it for "bridged" mode (i.e. as a modem only).

(1) is the simplest method, as you have to do more for (2). (2) is generally preferable though, and esp. when running a router under DD-WRT, as you can use more of the router's functionality.

In the end, it's up to you. If you're happy with the 2wire's performance as a router, and only have a problem with its wireless...

As posted above by Madwand1, If you want to use the Asus as a Router you have to configure the 2Wire to work a s a Modem only.

Two Routers in one network is Not a good idea.
