Ok, well a few of my friends talked with a few of their friends who [...] and anyway, we've decided to get together and hold one fairly large lan party for all of us (in the range of about 50 people or so), and I've apointed myself network admin of it all (cuz I just love this stuff, and am pretty much one of the only people that could get it all together in our group).
Anyway, two question, first for layout. What I was thinking for layout of the network is having one fairly large (16 or 24) port 10/100 switch in the center of it all. The server(s) will be connected dirrectly to this switch. Then we'll have about 10 or so 5-8 port hub/switches (whatever people happen to bring) branching off of this to get to the people on the floor. I was thinking this way cuz then everyone has ~15mbps or so dedicated to them (user>hub>switch>hub>user) and we have numerous of these small hubs (and even a few switches) floating around, but no large ones, so I'm going to have to buy the large (16-24 port) one.
That brings me to my second question: where can I get a good *cheap* 16 or 24 port 10/100 switch? I especially mean CHEAP! (hey, we're a bunch of highschoolers that waste all there money on computers and girlfriends, how much you think we have left over? 😀) I've been looking on Ebay, where 16's go for about $70 and 24's for about $120, but none of them are that good (I actually bought a 24 for only $72, but it was broken and had to return it 🙁 ). Anyone have any suggestions as to where to get these.
Thanks for any help, hope I can pull this thing off,
Peter Nelson
