So I went to a large Honda dealer in Dallas Texas over the 4th of July weekend for the dread 100K timing belt change AND water pump replacement.

Total charge (including everything -parts/labor/supplies/taxes/etc.- out the door) was $798. It was for a 2001 Honda CRV.

Fair price? Also, are there websites that I can check how much a repair job on a vehicle would cost? Similar as Pricegrabber or Google Product but for automobiles. TIA.

I recently quoted out my wife's 2005 civic 100,000 mile service including timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, transmission fluid, brake fluid, ps fluid, all belts, hoses, coolant flush and air and cabin filter for $950.

This is in the Sacramento, CA area.

So.... me getting a bunch of other things added but only $150 more than your quote? Something doesn't add up.

When the water pump on my 96 Galant went out, it cost me $25 for the part (junkyard) and $400 to install...lol (I think I paid that much.)

I remember arguing with the woman (yeah woman mechanic) because I couldn't believe a part that cost so little would cost so much to put in. hahaha

The dealership quoted something like $650 for our '98 CR-V, I think. Could have been more but it's hard to say, there was a lot of other crap that needed done and I forget the breakdown.

Fairly cheap IMO. DOHC cars suck in this aspect. PT Cruiser cost $900+ and isn't something I'd do myself.

For a Honda dealer, that is about right. For an independent shop, you can probably get it done for $200-300 less. Don't forget about valve adjustment. It should also include plugs, belts, and coolant. As others have stated, you probably need your tranny, brake, and PS fluid replaced as well at that mileage.

Not bad, but +1 for those who do it themselves.

The timing kit for my car was $62.95 (eBay) and it includes everything.

Only things I still need are valve cover gasket (not sure of price), RTV sealant, and some fresh oil for the oil change.

But that's not a bad price from a dealer I guess!

Surprisingly, my dad only paid about $500 to have the t-belt in the Camry changed at the dealer. Personally I thought it was quite inexpensive. Maybe they were desperate...

$600ish for a 96 Accord. Though there were other problems found during the service and ended up costing over a thousand total.

WTH... this is normally stuff you dont buy used. a NEW water pump will be like $50-125 on 85% of cars. Galants are very common. Why would you buy a used part on something VERY important to your engine, hopefully you got a NEW belt installed on this galant as well.

First car. First time needing something "major" done. I just went with what the mechanic said. She mentioned that I'd need a new timing belt and so on...but I thought she was just trying to "pad" the price.

FWIW, the car ran great for the rest of the time I owned it. (Approx 4 years after.)

You got lucky!, thing is most water pumps on FWD are a pain to get out it's the labor that kills you. I had to change a heater core in my Escort and found the lowest price one @ $45 but it sucked 2 years later when it started leaking again!. 15 hour job to change it and my hands looked like I put them in a meat grinder!..
