I am purchasing some lawn equipment from someone who is moving and I can also purchase their TV. It is older but the reviews looked really good when it came out. I am having a hard time figuring out what current fair market value is since it was so expensive in 2008 but is rather old now. The owner knows they paid close to $4,000 and are asking me to make an offer.

Any suggestions? Is there anything that tends to go wrong on this model tv?

Thanks!

Considering that you can get 50" TV's for $500-$600 these days, maybe $150 tops. But at that age, I would just pass all together.

New price in 2008 is irrelevant. I paid $1400 for a 42" in 2008 on SALE. Would you consider paying anywhere near that now? Of course not, it still works perfectly but I'd probably have a hard time getting $100.

TVs dont hold value. He will probably think its worth at least half what he paid..yeah right. Just compare it to the same size TV today that is most likely better anyways and go from there.

$100. Its an old TV. You can get a new 52" TV for $500 or less with more features.

Yeah, maybe $200 but certainly no more. However, I wouldn't doubt it probably has better IQ than a new low-end TV. My folks' $500 50" Sharp looks terrible but it's fine for them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking a $300-$500 since it looks to be in excellent condition but given the age I think I agree that $200 is a better price.

I have also located a Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD 50" set locally. I have not seen this in person yet but they are asking $550. I have no idea how many hours of use and if I understand correctly, this isn't something you can verify without accessing the service menu with a PC.

Any thoughts on $550 for the Pioneer? I know I lusted over this set when it came out but again it is rather old now.

Thanks!

BUY THE PIONEER!! Haggle on the price a bit, but buy it. It was the finest plasma TV on the market for YEARS and has an absolutely mind-melting picture quality. You'll have to watch it in a rather dark room for full effect, but that Kuro will absolutely stomp that XBR5, which is, btw, a 2007 model. XBR6 was 2008.

That XBR5, considering that it wasn't even a great TV when it was made, and can't hold a candle to today's LCDs, is worth maybe $100 in my eyes. It's so old that the backlight will be on its way out soon. Honestly there's now way you could get more than $100 out of me for a conventionally lit LCD of ANY size if it was that old.

The Kuro on the other hand is built like a tank and should last you some years yet. Again, it was the top plasma TV for several years. Pioneer left the plasma business because the consumer is a moron and makes poor decisions. It had nothing to do with bad products. Pioneer made a rock solid TV.

Buy the Kuro. Hurry before they sell it to someone else.

I'd chop one of my fingers off for that TV.

Thanks for the advice! I just picked up the Kuro for $500 yesterday. The TV looks close to brand new and I can't wait to move into my new house next month and get it setup. I will be looking for a wall mount next - any feedback on this model?

Too bad it's only 50". Too small for most rooms :)

Yeah i have a 50" Pioneer KRP-500M calibrated by D-Nice but wish i had sprung the cash for the 60" looking back. Currently collecting dust as i prefer the 65" panasonic i have now. Size only. Picture is better on Pioneer, but the panasonic isnt a sloutch either.

Even 60" is a touch small IMHO. Heck, we sit less than 10' from the TV and our 65" is starting to seems small!
