Yeah, this started happening to me all of a sudden. Giving blood was never a problem, then I fainted twice. It was both times after fasting for 12 or so hours, very very weird. One second I was reading a dilbert comic on the wall in the examining room, the next I was in the Dilbert comic, then BOOM, it was like the camera angle in the movies with all the Doctors and nurses looking down at you and super bright light behind them.

So, just recently I had to do it again and was fully ready to pass out, but I didn't...I also didn't have to fast.

Now, much weirder is this one:
I had to go in for an eye exam about a month ago. the Doc puts in some of those eyedrops in one eye so it will dilate and sends me to wait in the waiting room for them to take effect. While I'm sitting there, I start feeling all light headed so I make my way to the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face, this is when I realized I didn't know where it was, so I staggered up to the front desk adn asked...at this point I was super drunk feeling. The receptionist says "Oh, it's just through the doors, turn right then left and then there is another door at the end of the hallway" Haha, ya right! I made it to the first set of doors and everything went black, but I was still trying to feel my way around...I hear "are you alright?" then the next thing I knew I was laying on the floor with people all staring at me. I felt reeeeally cool.

Now, why did I pass out from eye-drops?

I'm not afraid of needles or the thought that they draw blood. But this morning, they had to take 4 samples of blood and I totally just fainted while they were taking blood. I had been fasting like they had told me. Its slightly embarrasing. :(

Anyone have any tips on how to prevent this?

*I'm fainting because of the blood loss I think. Not the sight of it.*

Yeah, don't be such a pansy.

you have what's called a vasovagal reaction to getting your blood drawn. from medterms.net:

"Vasovagal reaction: A reflex of the involuntary nervous system that causes the heart to slow down (bradycardia) and that, at the same time, affects the nerves to the blood vessels in the legs permitting those vessels to dilate (widen). As a result the heart puts out less blood, the blood pressure drops, and what blood is circulating tends to go into the legs rather than to the head. The brain is deprived of oxygen and the fainting episode occurs. "

it's not uncommon. i have it too, and it's hell getting blood drawn. i have to lay down, grip a squishy ball, and continually make conversation with the nurse to keep me concscious, and i still get woozy. there's nothing you can do to cure yourself of it, save for routinely being injected or having blood drawn. so don't feel embarrassed, just explain to whomever is taking your blood about your response, and you'll be fine.

When i was about 13 my appendix ruptured and they apparently didn't get all of the infection out when they removed it. Everything was fine for first 3 or 4 days then I get a high fever, and terrible pain in my abdomen from the infection....so I ended up going to hospital and getting blood drawn twice a day for the next week to check white blood cell counts before they determined that they didn't need to do another surgery. Ever since then I've had zero fear of blood drawing, blood donation or needles in general.

As someone else mentioned though...I hate it when you get a nurse / phlebotomist who doesn't know what they're doing and has to stick me 4 times to get the vein I get quite irritated.

I get three big vials taken 4x a year. I don't pass out but I do like to make a weird breathing sound that helps me focus. One time it freaked the test lady out and she had some people come to restrain me

when i donated blood, however much they took it was fun. i was gerat. watched them stick that big ass needle into my arm, and watched the blood start to flow. then the girl next to me passed out, and then another person in the room passed out.

after donating i got up, drank a juice and wanted to leave but was told to just stay for a few minutes so i wandered around and then left.

might help that i was 160lbs (185 now)

I went to donate blood and did a double donation. I went to football practice right after. It was like 90 degrees and humid. After some hitting drills and just finishing up sets of sprints...I passed out. I suffered from slight memory loss for a while. I couldn't remember where I was or what had happened prior for the next 15-20 minutes.

I pass out every time. I don't mind the sight of blood, but without fail I'll pass out. I'll look at the vial filling up, then all of a sudden it will stop. At that point I know I have about 10 seconds until I pass out.

You are NOT fainting because of the blood loss. It's entirely in your head. The human body has about 5 liters of blood. They're taking, what, 4 test tubes full? Not even half a pint.

Congratulations. Your ability to use both metric and english measurements in the same sentence and describing the same item qualifies you for a job at Nasa where units are meaningless!
LOL - I was JUST talking to a co-worker about that today. Her boss uses "millimeter" and "milliliter" (as in metric units of volume and length) interchangably. I told her he should go work for NASA.

As someone said already, if I watch them stick me, it's pass-out time. Otherwise I'm fine.

I watch them stick me and I watch the blood pump out and fill up the vial. Doesn't bother me in the least.

I draw lots of blood, when I suspect they're going to have problems, I tell them to take a deep breath, then let 1/2 of it out and hold it...

It gives them something to do besides freak out on the veinipuncture.

I also have the option of having them lay down, which I usually do, I've seen patients topple over & hit the hard tile floor more than once...

No shame in it (fainting) the people that like having sharp steel needles stuck in their veins are the ones that concern me....
