Hi,

I am installing a new mb and cpu. I had everything running but there was a problem with the heatsink fan (really noisy). I replaced the fan and in the process I removed the CPU to clean off the thermal compund before re-installing the new fan/heat sink.

Now when I power up, the computer fails to post. No beeps, no nothing.
The fans seem to start up fine, everythings eems ok, then the system immediatly shuts down.

Here is what I have done so far.

Unplugged HD and CDrom... still same problem.
I reset the CMOS (tried this twice).
Finally, I removed the CPU and heatsink/fan., powered up, and although nothing happens, the system doesn't power down... the fans continue to run.

Did I screw up the CPU when I removed it to clean the thermal compound? or did I screw up the MB when i re-installed the CPU?

Or.. hopefully, I did something really really stupid that is easy to fix. (and not costly).

MB - ASUS A7N8X
CPU - AMD 2700+

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

have you(with system off unplugged..) cleared the CMOS to reset the BIOS to defaults..?what do you mean shutdown..?

as in no display ..?

shut down, as in the power immediatly shuts off after about 3 or 4 seconds. all the fans quit, the hd quit spinning.

also.. yes. as per the user's manual, i unplugged the power, romoved the battery, and switched the jumpers to clear the CMOS, then reset the jumpers, put the battery back in, plugged in the power, and tried to boot. still the same problem, all the fans crank up, but before any beeps, everything just shuts back down. :-(

hey, i have the exact same problem with my new board, does not even POST. cpu fan turns on, led's turn on, then everything shuts off in 3-4 seconds. i still do not know what is wrong. i tried different RAM, a different processor. when i leave the processor out, then the led's stay on and the MB doesnt shutoff. if anyone knows what to do then please tell me!

look at the capacitors on the board to see if any are bulged at the top.
also get a tester for your PWS and see if its workin

i dont know if this will help but is your heatsink fan plugged into the correct header?
some mb manufacturers will have the mb automatically shut off if the fan rpm sensor doesnt register.
sort of a safety thing to keep you from burning up your processor if you havent plugged in the fan.
good luck

Did you use solvent of some kind to remove the old thermal compound, and was the compound artic sliver or something similar? If you suspect the CPU may be damaged, do you have (or can you borrow) another one to test your system?

I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the cpu. also, i didn't think about it, but i never thought to plug in my old fan/heatsink (the noisy one) to make sure that the new one wasn't messed up.

i did get a reply from asus and they just said to update the bios. (ugghh)

i am going to borrow a cpu from a friend tonite and check to try and elminate the cpu.

one other thing i have done, i have removed all the components from the case and placed them on cardboard boxes just to make sure there wasn't a short. hopefully, with the new cpu (and the old noisy fan) i can get further along than the 3-4 seconds.
