Sounds like a good name for a war movie.

My 5yo Dell XPS is on its way out. Reading up on it, it seems this particular error hit a bunch of folks @warranty+30 days so 5 years ain't so bad. The machine boots 1/4 tries now. I took all the suggestions on things to try and it booted this morning so here I am you lucky devils. Oh well, new machine is on order and might be here by Friday, unless it isn't.

Also, what was Dell thinking in hiding the air intake to the PSU chamber beneath a hunk of plastic that makes it just about impossible to clean? That it is also sucking air off the floor or tabletop is also not so smart.

As I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down
As I was sinking down beneath God's righteous frown...

That was ugly. I ran Windows 7 Update Adviser to find out which hardware I could recycle on the new machine. I had to plug some USB devices back in to run the check. As soon as I plugged in the USB scanner the fans went wild and down it went. Over an hour later I was able to get it to boot again. I had to reseat the memory sticks (memory parity errors) and a bunch of other wigglin' of parts. Now I get a bunch of BAR errors but the computer loads for the moment. Hopefully it won't catch fire before the new machine arrives. In the mean time, more backing up of stuff...
