On-the-fly CD copying depends on the capability of your CD-ROM drive. Your Plextor 40x might not be able to handle 12x.

Close all other programs running by ending all unneeded tasks in the task manager and see if that helps.

Are you positive your CD-Rs are 12x. They do say 12x on them right?

I think he states that it is a 12x CDRW. But how high is the media rated?

Edit: Oops! Simultaneous postings.

Thanks for the prompt replies.
Well i should hope the Ultraplex 40 max would be able to read fast enough although what would i look up to find out for sure?.Yes the media has an actual label on it certified media 1X/2X/4X/6X/8X/12X plus. The site where i purchased these from actualy had a sign up stating that the mitsui media was now rated at 16X ,thats why i sent for them to try and make sure. But even with that the most puzzleing part is the fact that even just taking tracks from the hard drive it won`t do its thing.

cabman--you definitely have the system to do this. Mine is way less, and burns OTF or non-OTF @ 12x. Yes, the 40x will support it....at least with the latest firmware flash. I use 32x and 40x with the same burner, and both do OTF @ 12x, with far lesser media.

1. IME, media doesn't matter, but your Mitsuis are top quality.
2. I would suggest the latest firmware flashes for both reader and writer.
3. If I had to guess, I'd think it might be that you don't have the latest ASPI layer. Have you checked?
4. I don't know that much about SCSI ID's, but they are all different, correct?
5. I doubt that it would have anything to do with, I'm assuming, the VIA chipset?
6. Have you had this burner working at 12x at all?
7. You might check the Nero site. They have some pretty in depth troubleshooting.
8. With SCSI, I don't think DMA is an option?

Hopefully, someone will come along with a real solution...I know I didn't provide one.

Thanks Randy for the informative reply.
Its obvious i need to really sit down and read up on a bunch of stuff, as to be honest theres a few things i don`t even know about.LOL :D at least i got the media right .The SCSI side of things is set up ALL A OK in regards to I.D`s/termination etc.as for the firmware flash`s i wouldn`t know what ones i have or not,is there a place i can check? also whats an ASPI?? and where would i check for such a beast ??.As for the Plex working at X12 at all when i first got the thing i installed EZCD creator and ran the equipment test thing and it said then it ran at X12,after that i installled the plexmanager2000 with the update and ran into stop page faults so took it all out and went and got nero.I will be going back into the nero site as you suggested to try and find something that might help, although you might have allready hit the nail on the head. Thanks

If the cd-rom and cd burner are on the same IDE channel you'll run into problems. Computers have a very hard time addressing both drives at the same time if they are on the same channel. If you can, put them on different channels.

My 12/10/32 Iomega Burner and my DVD drive are both on the same IDE channel and I don't have problems doing a direct CD copy at 12x.

Your Adaptec card may be the problem, If you are using the latest adaptec drivers (1.00b I beleive) you should go into the cards BIOS and disable domain validation. If you have your SCSI chain configured correctly, you dont need it on anyway. Domain validation tests transfer rates between drives and it's broken in the latest drivers.

I'm assuming the burner/cdrom are on a seperate channel than the HD?
If so, the cdrom should have an ID of around 3, and the burner should have 6, no more no less less.

The higher the ID, the more priority given to a device, so that's why fast devices always have lower priorities becasue the devices that are slower need to get their data out quicker to keep up with them.

HD's should always have around 0, cdroms around 3, burners around 6.
SCSI card should always be on 7.
