Failing IBM Deskstar...

I have read in the past about the IBM Deskstars failing for a lot of people...

The other day I have noticed mine acting up. I have it 30GB split into partitions. When I try accessing the second one, the drive makes this grinding noise for a few minutes, not being able to access files. On top of that a couple of files cannot be read due to a CRC error.

I realize that not much can be deduced from the above description, but I am wondering if this is simply a result of bad sectors (i haven't check for them), or should I be worried about the other two partitions as well?

I guess I will by calling IBM...

Thanks for the help

backup right now...

your drive is probably failing, and if you have stuff that you want to save, do so now...

you might as well call up IBM and ask for an RMA while you're at it...

also, run DFT (drive fitness test) available at ibm's website...

that gives you the code you need to get an RMA for your drive if it finds problems with the drive!

I've had two of those drives die on me. For me they made a clicking sound when trying to access. But I'd definately backup and then run the DFT. In fact, I'd just send the drive in no matter what the DFT says. I'm not sure I'd trust it.
