Failing CPU Test

I've got a problem with a new system my friend got and I built for him its almost identical to mine.
We have had to reseat the processor twice to get it to reboot, it gave us "failed cpu test".
I've also seen it give the corruped bios message where it wants the CD to restore it, but i just cycled power and it works.

after reseating, it detects new processor and yadda yadda.

I gave him a Memtest86 (v3) cd to run on it overnight so i'll see what that turns up but wonder if anyone had any ideas.

If reseating the processor seems to get it up and running, my guess is that there is something wrong with the mobo socket. If you have another processor to try, you can test to see if has anything to do with the processor.

Try also testing with one stick of memory at a time (if you have 2) or use some other memory to see if it is the memory that is at fault.

Which mobo/cpu combo is it?

Also, make sure you take care of the basics: make sure the lock down lever for the CPU is in the UP position when installing the CPU. Do not use force to install the CPU. It should just gently drop into the socket if oriented correctly. Then, gently "hold down" the CPU while closing/locking the lever down. Make sure the lever is indeed LOCKED down. Eyeball the CPU installation to be sure it is sitting flat in the socket and fully inserted. Also, check the clearance around the HSF to be sure it is not pressing against anything. Make sure you don't use excessive amounts of thermal paste on the CPU core when seating the HSF. Ensure that the HS fan is plugged into the MB CPU fan socket (if your board requires fan detection). You should also check your vcore voltage. If you don't have something like MBM5, then go into the BIOS, in the Hardware monitoring section and verify the correct voltage. Is the unit being overclocked at all?
