Failing a class in college

Alright. Yeah. So I had it coming. Chemistry was never my strong point (required for my major though). I took it a little less seriously than I should, coming off the high school mentality that it would all work out in the end, or there was always more time to fix it. My mistake.

Chem final is over, it was like playing whack-a-mole with my scantron sheet, only blind and apparently in a field with no moles. Not so surprising, then, when I got an F for the course 2 days later.

So before I go hang myself off Noyes lab or commit seppuku in the corner with a broken frisbee, what kind of options do I have left open to me? Obviously I'm retaking the course, and the F isn't going to magically change into a C, but I'm more concerned about its (rather damning) effect on my GPA.

Basically, I'm depressed as fvck. Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm the retard. So help me out here.

Please.

Gonna go study for my econ final now -_-

I wish I have something positive to say, but I was in the same situation as you before (also failed Chem 1st year, same mentality), and my GPA never really recovered (even though I did A LOT better the years after)...

A C would be fine by my standards (just want to get it out of the way). Heck, a D would've been enough, which is probably where I stumbled (wrong mentality). My other classes are doing fine, and I only see my grades going up over the next few years, but a F really is a shot in the foot.

Regarding seeing the "prof" (didn't really have one, chose possibly the worst section of chemistry possible where lecture/discussion were rolled into one class taught by a TA and we didn't really learn anything), the TA is most likely well aware of my.. hm.. lack of effort in the class, so any negotiations there would probably fail.

So it really is as bad as it seems eh? The GPA hit? Fun.

If you take it over, it should replace the grade....hence finxing your GPA....you could take it at another rschool and transfer a C over and it will carry no weight on your GPA since most schools will not weigh in transfered classes (it will also nullify your F, but the F will still show up on your transcript)....OR you could simply take the class again and get whatever passing grade you need. If this is Chem 1, just get a C and do somethng else.

So if I took Chem again at the local community college (what I was planning on doing anyways), and transfer the passing grade over, it would be like I never took chemistry GPA-wise? Just show up on my transcript...

That's how it works at most schools.....

F = 0 credit, but anything other is full credit, so you did not get any credit. To actually get credit, you need something to fill that void. By taking the class at another school, you make the credits pass, so the F is now gone b/c you cannot have one set of credits represented by two grades.

If you take it over at your school, the passing grade will be factored int your GPA, not the failing one.

Wouldn't it be better for you to retake it in the school you're in now? or is that not allowed?

Does it replace or just average out with the F?

If it replaces, life is good again and i'm a happy bunny (well, not really, 2 more finals, but close enough).

If it just averages... I'd rather the community college route than try to get an A to average it out to a C...

replaces it....

but if you take the class at another school, the grade will not be factored int your GPA at all.

lol...not too depressed to throw in a random Robert Hamburger reference though 🙂

i say check with your school's counselors... i know at my school if you got an F and retook the class, it replaced it, but you were only allowed a certain amount of classes that you could replace the grade (3 if i recall correctly)... after those 3 it would start averaging instead of replacing

At my school, retaking a class does not replace the old grade, they just average out the 2 grades. They don't have any type of program to replace a grade.

Also, taking the class at a community college and transferring the class over to your uni will not transfer the grade. Just the credits.

Take it again and it replaces the grade in your GPA

Now be happy

At SOME colleges that is the case. At many (most) it is not, the F stays along with whatever your next grade is when you retake.

But - why is this stressing you out so much? Sure it was a horrifically stupid move - but just retake the class, and do better next time. It's too late to worry about it now. As for your GPA, it is good for exactly 3 things - 1) scholarships, 2) getting an internship and/or first job, 3) grad school. #1 and #3 are the critcial ones there, if they aren't a problem then you have time to make the GPA up.

if you didn't get an A after the third time, they should just make lock you from that class😉

Depends on the school you goto. My school allowed you to retake it and replace the grade. The original F would remain but be removed for GPA purposes.

In all reality what you have to do is find the last day of the semester you can drop. If you are getting a D without the possibility of a C or an F drop the thing and live to fight another day.

yeah, D is the worst. It kills your GPA....but you cannot retake the class elsewhere to replace or nullify the grade.

I'm worried about the first job/grad school mostly... that and its a slap in the face, so its logical to be stressed I guess. I'm normally not the stressing type (gee, can you tell?), but thinking about the future too much puts you down a bit.

So basically, depending on my school's system, I have three options..

1) Retake course, replacing the F
2) Retake course, averaging out with the F (oof, A in chem?)
3) Take course at community college, transfer credits over and nullify the F's effect on my GPA

Time to do some research.

Some schools allow you to retake it to make a better grade. My school was pretty lax on that stuff.

The best advice I ever got was to drop classes you cant get a C in.
