As title says i tried to set fsb to 166fsb from my previous 144fsb. After i set to 166fsb it failed to boot into windows. Then when i rebooted to change the fsb back to 144 it wouldn't post. I reset the CMOS and now i'm back at my lousy 144fsbx10.5=1.5Ghz Here's my stuff let me know what u think is holding me back

300w Antec PSU
Coolermaster HSF with massive airflow from case fans (40c idle, dunno underload can't get mon prog to work)
AGP bus is locked but i dunno about PCI, but i'm assuming
Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (heard this doesn't oc well)
Then ur usual hd's/lan/cd-rom/RW/floppy/usbcard ect. ect.

The problem could be you only have PC2100 ram which is 133Mhz not 166Mhz
and you only have an XP1600+ so at 166Mhz that would be 1743MHz and i bet your crappy coolermaster heatsink cant handle that.
also 40C at idle is HOT. I have a 1800+ tbed @1950MHz and its 40C at full load for 8 hours.

oh and your motherboard is like the slowest amd 760 chipset board they ever made.

If you're serious about overclocking, newegg has some refurbished kt333 and kt400 boards for about $49 shipped, including soltek. I also suggest a better power supply. They had some refurbished antec and enermax ones recently for $28-48.

Ya i was always serious about overclocking but i've never had the right stuff to get a decent overclock. i had to make this on a tight budget ($650). guess i'll just have to be content with what i got for now.

It can! i've never had a problem with stabilty/heat.

It's AMD761 chipset :) faster than my old celly on 66fsb

get yourself a epox8k3a or an asus a7n8x and some nice pc2700ram, then you should have no problem, oh yeah and a better cooler

you can not compare temps between mobos let alone different computer setups....if you ever read one of Mikewarrior's post you would have a better understanding of this issue...different mobos will give higher vs lower temp ..

the key issue is stability ....if you o/c and temps go up beware ..get a new HSF but this will not always buy more speed....sometime a chip just hits the wall or another hardware component is the limiting factor

Your Ram may not be up to snuff, and the 761 chipset has difficulty reaching 166MHz stable, more like 150-160 is a normal overclock for that chipset.

Your CPU may not be able to overclock that high. I have 3 sticks of PC2100 DDR that can run up to 170MHz FSB at CAS2, so your memory may not be the problem. If you get a new motherboard you can run at 166MHz or even 200MHz FSB with the PCI and AGP at stock frequencies.

If you really want to hit 166, upgrade in order:
1. mobo
2. RAM/PSU
3. HSF- however, try lapping it if you havent.

You said that you went straight from 144 to 166... try moving a little slower... 1 FSB at a time...
Unlock it, or have someone unlock it for you... (PM me)

It's either your ram, or your hard drive.
With my Crucial PC2100, i can always only hit 147FSB max.. and when i tried to boot on another hdd, i can hit past 166MHz. Most hard drives can't handle very high PCI speeds.

I'll try the 1fsb at a time and see wherei get to. as for the ram i'm going to take a stick of 2700ddr out of my dads pc then try again. i'm worried if i go to high i'm going to get some data corruption since i'm not 100% sure my board has pci locks. i might just buy a new mobo- this one is kinda old anyways.

I tried to unlock before but it was a disaster- i used a pencil and super glue and took a try at the L1 bridges and nothing happened!
It's either your ram, or your hard drive.
I'll try taking out my other lame hd- a quantum 15gigger

Right now @ 148fsb, i'm afraid to go past since if i dun have pci locks it'll go past 37.9Mhz (the corruption zone for pci stuff i think)
