My brother's Motorola Surfboard SB4100 modem is not connecting to the isp. When he looked at the logs it said that the modem Failed to establish Time of Day. He tried to reboot it, he unplugged it for a long time but it hasn't worked. Anybody have any solutions to this problem?

Thanks

Yup, call the Cable company and tell them he has a new modem. They need to program their system to accept the new modem.

Would that work even if it isn't a new modem? The modem worked before.. and it just suddenly did not want to connect.

Ask the cable company. They have mystical powers to see everything your modem is doing through the cable line. They can help you a lot more than I can.

Thanks for your replies. We really appreciate it. =) My brother just called and not surprisingly comcast said they couldn't help us out... So I think right now i think he might go and get another modem.

Er... how long did he talk to Comcast? Because generally they'll support you as long as your modem isn't connected to their network. Past that "it must be your router."

he was talking to them for awhile and they tried to do some stuff on their end but they couldn't fix it and wanted to send a technician out to check it out. We're not connected to a router either. But knowing comcast all they will do is check the cables and not the modem since we bought out own modem instead of renting/leasing it.

Does the modem get IP though? If it is provisioned, it should work. I have similar issues about every other month with Charter on a 3100. It is usually a sign that the #$@* Cisco router they use is screwing up again. Not sure if they reset that switch or what they do to correct it though. If you are getting IP, check your lease length. It may be a sign that the switch is having issues and not the surfboard.

I think I finally have enough customer history (I talk to them every month now) that they start to believe me. I did have to ask for the supervisor immediately last time though because the "tech" support person wanted me to reboot my OS because the surfboard was not getting time of day or IP.

Its actually a sign that your cable line's upstreams are full if it cannot stay sync'd and get an IP. I dont think this is the cable modem's fault.

Forgot to mention, go into the web interface of the cable modem, and see if setting another upstream helps.
