I have a couple of issues...
Windows would not open any folders or My Computer, My Documents, Windows Explorer, Control Panal, from either the desktop of from the Start Menu. You could open folders and that from another program such as Paint. Doing a System Restore was a temp fix.
After it happened again I proceeded to do another System Restore to the same date, but this time Windows never finished the Restore. I instead got the blue screen about shutting down my PC to keep it safe.
The System Restore had been running for a good 15 minutes, which raised red flags. I tried to restart Windows and was given the option of starting normally, in the last good settings, and the various safe modes. None of them ever get past the Blue screen warining me about shutting downs Windows to protect me. I tried booting from the XP CD going into the Recovery, but not being very familiar with it, was not able to diagnos the problem let alone fix it.
I did run 'CHKDSK \p' which told me their was 2 somethings. I tried fixing the boot file, but otherwise not very much progress was made.
If I can't find the solution to the problem I have two options. I can do a clean instale of Windows. But I would like to get a couple of important files, so can and/or would it be safe to connect the HD to my other machine to try to recover the files, my concern being that this could have all stemmed from some kind of nasty virus.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to include as much information as possible.
Any and all suggestion are welcome.
And finally a big thanks in advance.
