Caught this story in the local paper and found it amusing. What really got me laughing was what happened to the get-away car driver.
BRIDGEPORT ? A pair of would-be pizzeria robbers reportedly had the tables turned on them ? with a vengeance ? when the restaurant's staff started pummeling them and they had to be rescued by police Monday night.
When officers arrived at Grand Pizza on Main Street, police said they found the alleged robbers ? Valentine Rodriguez, 22, and Raymond Cardona, 23 ? being beaten by several restaurant employees.
After being arrested, the two men were taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center where they received treatment for numerous bruises.
The battered duo were arraigned Tuesday before Superior Court Judge Burton Kaplan on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Kaplan ordered Rodriguez, of uncertain address, held in lieu of $200,000 bond, and Cardona, of Linen Avenue, held in lieu of $100,000 bond. The judge continued the case to July 27.
The pizzeria employees were closing up for the night shortly before 10:30 p.m. when the two defendants, one armed with a handgun, rushed in the back door and demanded money, according to police.
As Rodriguez was emptying the cash register, the restaurant owner struck him on the head with a bottle and three employees subdued Cardona, police said.
Rodriguez tossed the handgun into a sink and fled from the restaurant, but was tackled by an employee in the parking lot. The money he took scattered everywhere, police said.
While police were investigating, they were approached by Nicole Woehrle, 24, of Stratford Road in Stratford.
Police said Woehrle told them she had driven Rodriguez and Cardona to the restaurant and was waiting around the corner for them with the car running.
She was promptly arrested for conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery and later ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bond.
