Lowering the bar is never a good idea and applies especially in this case.

The people who made this decision need to take the responsibility if it doesn't work. Are they willing to put their job on the line, if this doesn't work? I doubt it.

The Chicago Way, baby. Lowering the bar for all of us.

From the article:

"Dropping the exam would bolster minority hiring..."

Aha...now we get to the real agenda here. Affirmative Action at its finest.

When you hire Beavis and Butthead to be your policeforce, you'll end up with cops tasering 10 year olds.

this reminds me of Florida during the cocaine war era how they were short on cops so they stopped asking on the application if the applicant had taken drugs in the last whatever and acceptance went up something crazy like 50% (or whatever it was)

hmmm I guess if you got caught with a little coke in your pocket the police would let you off and keep if for himself.

I'm just glad I don't have to pass any intellectual acuity test to post here.

The Chicago Police Department would like to talk to you.

More dumbing down of America. This is exactly what any city does not need. Lawyers will be making easy mint getting criminals off because unqualified police officers botched an arrest.

And these exams also help screen people who psychologically should not be police officers.
And if they can't make it there there's always Louisiana.

This reminds me a little bit of the movie A Clockwork Orange where Alex's droogs ended up becoming police officers (who later dragged him into the woods and "bathtub-boarded" him).

And if they can't make it there there's always Louisiana.

They can work for this guy:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6549329
The 74-year-old, 300-pound sheriff — down from 400 pounds, he proudly points out — sits at his desk surrounded by his large gun collection.

"I'm still as full of piss and vinegar as I was 20 years ago," he says.

In Jefferson Parish, Lee is well known for his personal Mardi Gras float; outside the parish, he's famous for his mouth.

Twenty years ago, after a rash of robberies by black men of white residents in their driveways, Lee vowed to stop and question blacks driving "rinky-dink cars" in white neighborhoods. The NAACP called on him to resign.

"We know the crime is in the black community. Why should I waste time in the white community?" Lee was quoted as saying.

"We know where the problem areas are. If we see some black guys on the corner milling around, we would confront them," he said.

More recently, Lee says he wants to patrol dangerous neighborhoods in armored vehicles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Lee_%28sheriff)
Once Lee was accused of trying to separate the races by issuing an order erecting a barricade on a street at the line dividing majority-black New Orleans and majority-white East Jefferson.

When an 8-year-old girl was raped in March 1998, the police initially described two black males as the culprits. Lee was criticized for declaring every black man in the subdivision a suspect.

Lee made the following statement, which either almost ended or saved his career:
"If there are some young blacks driving a car late at night in a predominantly white neighborhood, they will be stopped. There's a pretty good chance they're up to no good. It's obvious two young blacks driving a rinky-dink car in a predominantly white neighborhood—I'm not talking about on the main thoroughfare, but if they're on one of the side streets and they're cruising around—they'll be stopped."

Dropping the exam would bolster minority hiring and avert legal battles
This sounds familiar, they must be afraid of another situation like the one with the firefighter exam a while back.

From the way they behave I thought this was the criteria for all cops.

Another 'lowering the bar' story: A local township had a man the sheriff wanted to hire as a deputy. Normally the written test is little more than a formality, but one of the questions is "Have you ever had sex with an animal?" (Yeah, it's more than a little scary that's even on the test. Seriously, WTF?) In a fit of honesty, the man wrote "Well, every boy raised on a farm has at one time or another."* Oddly enough, that's an automatic fail. (Who knew?)

But it wasn't enough to deter the sheriff, who still wanted to hire him. So after some not-so-subtle hints, they gave him the test again. Most of you will not be surprised to know the hints did not register. (Men who think "Boy, Betsie sure is hot today!" are probably not the most perceptive pups in the litter.) Fail number two.

Evidently you can only take the test three times. For the third time, the deputy giving the test told him "I'm going to give you the test orally. And when it comes to the question "Have you ever had sex with an animal?", JUST SAY 'NO'. (Great advice - but a couple decades too late.) The third time was the charm and the guy became a sworn-in deputy.

*Having been raised on a farm I categorically deny that characterization, by the way.

It should sound familiar, enough departments have done this that studies have been done and it has the effect you would expect. When you lower the requirements, the effectiveness of the police force decreases.
