FAFSA questions

What qualifies me as a dependent? I'm 19, and depend on her for health insurance, and sometimes other stuff, but I don't live with her.

Definitely dependant.

25, married, veteran, disabled, or a parent...

Those are pretty much the options for being considered independant.

for tax purposes (to claim you as a dependent on her taxes) she has to provide more than 50% of your support (however, scholarships are not to be included in this calculation).

I'm not sure if the same holds true for fafsa or not.

Nope, FAFSA is totally different.

sure would make life easier if the government would adopt one definition for each term, wouldn't it?

If not, then I'd say that's dependant.

per TAX purposes I am independent.

I am on her health insurance, she pays my car insurance. I loan her $$ all the time (ends up being gifts aka not paid back; and I live on my own. I make much more $$ than she does). I knew fafsa was different though..

It is different for tax purposes because they want to know where your money is going and if you can afford to pay them more... not whether based on the money you make if you can put someone through college with no help.

The FAFSA tells you how to answer..I believe it's whether or not your parents claimed (or can claim) you as a dependent..

If you have a question, give them a call -- they're very helpful.
