FaD: Status of the Hordes

Hi,

After a bit of a sojourn from keeping the hordes up, I find that some have "stumbled" a bit. I have neglected the hordes over the past months and that has cost me in production.

Here at home, I have the following computers that are down for one reason or another since December.

(2) pIII 600's
(1) pIII 800
(1) pIII 550
(1) dual pIII 850 XEON
(1) xp2200+
(1) xp2400+
There's more but I'm lost right now

That is quite a chunk of crunchers to be offline and out of action:

Within the next few days I expect to repair several: (parts have arrived :D )

dual pIII 850 XEON will live again in a different case (it is replacing the pIII 550). I've got to rewire the front panel switches and LED's from a monolithic block to separate connectors (like standard cases). It is an old huge Gateway pII 266 server case with a new Super Flower 550W PSU. S/B fairly easy to do the soldering on the connections and stuff tomorrow and get it back into operation. That dual pIII 850 sure does a good job of crunching so I am loath to part with it just yet.
xp2400+ will have a new power supply tomorrow. I got in the new PSU today and will replace the crappy sleeve bearing fans (2) with BB fans and I need to add a special connector for the front panel LCD display. s/b a rather simple mod to make it live again.
xp2200+ will have a new power supply tomorrow.
The case that housed the dual pIII 850 will be home to a new XP3000+ mobile athlon with a very sweet video card, lots of dual channel DDR RAM, a 3 channel SCSI RAID, and lots of other goodies like a DVD burner, a SCSI DVD ROM, a SCSI CDR/W and XP Pro ... should be a good workstation for me and, of course, it will run FaD. I got in the P4 adapter today that will put it into service. The case has dual fault tolerant 500W ATX power supplies but was made before the P4 connector spec came out. Still an awesome case ... 18 bays ... lots of cooling ... very sweet. It is a great "stand" for my Scanner and such.
Let me see ...
In a day or two, I am transferring an XP2400+ system from a poorly ventilated basic cheap ATX case into a very nice DELL ATX case that used to house a pIII 600 mobo. I call it my "Stealth Dell".
I also received a new PSU today for an ailing GW Bryant that I upgraded to a pIII 800. ASAP, I will swap out the PSU, add some memory and get it back crunching.
I've got two ailing "cast off" 1.1 gHz Duron systems that need BIOS updates, BIOS reconfigurations, memory (to 512mb) and a new install of an OS and they can join the hordes. I got a couple of FX5200/128 video cards for those at the computer blowout sale today in Wentzville. They will make good additions to the hordes and probably very acceptable games machines for the "games" nights that I host.

... why all the sudden activity? I am definitely on the mend here.

I have a very strong desire to pass hob and let him suck wind. Actually, hob and I have a strong history and I want to see him foam at the mouth and have a seizure over my passing him! The mere word "cheating" throws hob into fits and seizures and causes him to do strange and unnatural acts. There is very little love lost between hob and myself. His frothing and foaming and attacking me on the XPC forums is largely the reason (and I admit I fomented them) that I left XPC. Once I pass hob ... well suffice to say that he will have little or nothing to brag about to me.

There is also Zippy ... not all that long ago ... as a reasonably low ranked participant in FaD, Zippy challenged me to come and get him ... Of course, then, I was not nearly the force that I am today. At that time, I admonished Zippy to be careful what he wished for. I don't think he had any clue what was about to transpire. Apparently, I will pass Zippy in a month or so. Zippy is like an old friend and this is just good fun. I wish the best for Zippy and hope that he will regroup and pass me again. Zippy is a great cruncher and a great DC friend. Hiya Zippy ... if you are reading this ... I'm still coming for you and that's all fact ... no brag. It has been under a year and with your lead at that time I am sure you thought you would never see me ahead of you .....

The "restorations" to the horde will no doubt help me reach these goals sooner rather than later.

To counter hob's by-line ... I've got at least 1GHZ online and crunching 24x7! ;) (that is all fact and no brag ... I think hob stretches his "truth" -- after all ... how could I catch and pass him with only a gHz give or take a few orders of magnitude ;) )

Thanks for all the fun guys. Thanks for your support in my hours of tribulation. It has been a fun adventure and the game is still afoot! :) Ross, we need more frequent stats!

So much for my drivel.

I am returning to FaD with several goals and with a lot of energy. I have been on hold with several situations in my life but I am now ready to "engage" and rejoin the fray. Hmmm wonder who on this team is up to coming after me ????

yep ... I think you got it.

I'm trying to reconstitute the hordes and ravage everything in sight ... I certainly could use a little help from the team folks ... a team rape and pillage would be a wonderful thing!

Great to hear that you are on the bend! That's the important part of that post IMO :)

Your timing is impeccable as it propelled us past Ukraine! w00t! (Okay... a combination of mondobyte returning and vbios.com leaving Ukraine and taking 13M pts with him ;) )

My dual MP1900 is up and crunching... this is going to be the backup to the current server. I've loaded it up with Win2K Server SP4, Apache 2, PHP 5, and MySQL 4. I plan on moving the stats databases and scripts over to this box to run in parallel, then cut over to reinstall the OS (upgrade from Win2K Pro to Win2K Server) and the latest version of the apps, then cut back over when it's done :) The backup server will run in my cubicle... if the 'production' server goes down, I'll just walk the backup into the server room and replace the prod server until I get it fixed :)

My wife just delivered our second child on the weekend. The prep, and event, have caused me to not be able to publish stats for over a week. My life should start returning to "normal" and I should be able to get back to three times a week soon.

Congrats Ross - Good JOB!!!!

An Update on the Hordes:

The Athlon XP-M 3000 is up at 2250 MHz for now ...

I've restored life to an XP2400+ that crashed due to a PSU failure. As it turns out the "advertised" 250W PSU in the case for 3 of my computers is really a really crappy 170W. Looks like I will be replacing all of them with 350W PSU's so I can put this problem to rest. Anyone have a clue how hard it is to find quality microATX SFX PSU's at over 250W ??? The ones I've found have crappy sleeve fans so it is a matter of modding them with BB Fans then adding the extra wiring for the case LED displays ad nauseum. Why don't they outlaw sleeve fans!!!!!

I'm working on the dual pIII-850 XEON right now ... s/b up in just an hour or two.

I was not aware of the tradition :)

I will try and uphold my end of the bargain by at least recruiting one PC.

It's great to hear all the good things in this tread! I'm tring to get all my machine going, but it's a slow process. Right now I'm running...

Athlon64 @ 2.15 Ghz, man this thing is slow :disgust:
AXP M @ 2.35 GHz
AXP barton running prime @ 2.28 GHz, she has more in her
AXP M @ 2.6, needs watercooling parts, down
AXP 1.6 GHz, needs lots of parts, down

All I've got running is a dual P3-1GHz, an Athlon64 @ 2.25GHz, and an AthlonXP @ 2.167GHz
