OK, I just started FaD today....it's been running for almost 22,000 seconds now, not quite 80% complete, 31 hits so far

Is this typical speed? I run an XP2400@2700, 512MB...the only info I could find at their site said it should take a couple hours, depending on the number of hits. Is this a lot of hits?? And what exactly are these 'hits'? I couldn't understand it at their site.

Sorry for the n00b questions

One n00b to another:

I've run about 10-15 jobs so far. 31 seems to be a low to average number of hits. The most I've ever gotten was 143 just today; that took almost two days on my XP2200 not overclocked. The lowest I had was 0, and it took something like 3 hours.

I'd love to know exactly what "hits" are, too. They seem to have to do with when a drug reacts well, but I'd like to know more.

A "hit" is when the drug interacts with the protein in a way that indicates binding is likely to occur.

A "Hit" is good if the protein is a cancer and the drug binds a critical site.

A "Hit" is bad if the protein is a normal body function and the drug binds to a site that is necessary for life to continue. (known as a drug Side Effect)

A job is a package of a protein binding site and ... usually ... around 10,000 drugs.

Jobs may run from seconds to a month or more. Hits may run from 0 to 2500+ depending on the protein under test and the drug library being tested.

There is no "typical" job or number of hits.

Hits DO NOT contribute to points ... time expended processing the job x computer processor rating determine points.

Does this help?

Welcome aboard JC.

I have processed a few jobs ... and I have based my answer on that "experience".

There are many more well experienced FaD-a-holics around here who will be more than pleased to answer any questions you may have.

There are a few more folks over at the Find-a-Drug.org forums that will be pleased to help you as well although I wonder if most of them have as much "experience" as I. They do try to be very helpful and many are very knowledgable about the projects.

Keep 'em' crunchin'
