I just bought a TBred 1800+ on Ebay that is supposedly retail box factory unlocked. Is this common with the TBreds? Does anyone know what multiplier is best to use with these?

Thanks!

From all reports, all the Tbred B CPUs are indeed factory unlocked, can't recall about Tbred As, sure someone will come in here soon enough and help ya out.

OKay, how about this one... Adding to my original question, what's the difference between a Tbred A & B?

the T-bred is a Palomino on a 0.13 micron process
but since AMD wasn't able to get the T-bred to higher speeds, they had to tweak it to reach higher speeds
hence the name T-bred B

Yep, the tweaking also involved adding another metal layer to increase scalability. The temperatures are pretty much the same, but normally the Tbred B processors will overclock a tad to much higher then the Tbred As.

For maximum performance, you will want to use the highest fsb as possible, thus a lower multiplier.

It will take some tweaking, but if you have good ram you should be able to set your fsb to at least 180 with a 10.5 multiplier.

Thanks for the info...

I got the processor and it doesn't seem to be unlocked :( There are NO laser cuts on the L1 bridges, and they look fine (just the two tiny dots on each side and a space between them), but on my ASUS A7N8X mobo (very sweet by the way), I change the multiplier and when the system boots up it stays the same speed? The BIOS setting might say 12.5X at 133 FSB, but it boots at the normal 1533MHz and all CPU identification programs say AMD XP 1800+ 1533 MHz, except MadOnion's PC Mark 2002. It seems to think that I have a 1.5 GHz Duron???!!!

I am confused??? Is there something that I was supposed to do to the chip when I got it to make it work? Pencil trick? etc...

Someone help if possible... Did I get screwed on Ebay? LOL

I got an email from the seller.... He suggested that it is my mainboard BIOS (ASUS A7N8X) that is causing the problem and needs to be updated? Apparently others are having the same problem with the mobo. The Multiplier selection is available to me, and I can change it, it just has no effect on the speed. The weird thing is... The BIOS saves the multiplier setting as if it should be okay and running fine...

There are no laser cuts between the L1 bridges, so it appears to me that they are intact. The seller is a reputable dealer on Ebay, and I got a good price for the retail box processor, so I don't think that I was cheated... I think I am just doing something wrong...LOL

I heard that some people are manipulating the L3 bridge to enable the multipliers.. Does anyone think I should be doing that? If so, how would I do it?

Thanks!

UPDATE!!! :) :) :)

Looks like my problem was solved through a simple BIOS flash... I set the multiplier back to 12.5X left memory at 133 and rebooted the machine after flashing the BIOS...

Booted at 2000+ (1.66GHz) Yay!!!!

Looks like I can only go up to 12.5, if I use 13, the processor reports as a 694MHz... I am using BIOS revison 1002.001 for the ASUS A7N8X. Anyone know if there is a revision, or anything that I can do to get more multipliers for my Tbred 1800+?

Thanks!

Yes, the tbred 1800+ and 1700+ are only unlocked to 12.5 (I have a 1700+ tbred A myself). Btw, no matter which one you have , you should be able to get at least 1.8 GHz out of it (my lowly Tbred A goes to 1.9 GHz stably).

To get a higher overclock, you have to either overclock the FSB (mine is at 166 MHz, but that's with a 1/5 AGP divider so everything else is at stock speed), or mod the bridges on the CPU to run at a higher multiplier. There are a lot of people who know how to mod the bridges on the CPU; alas I've never done it so you will have to ask someone else...
