Just about to put my heatsink on, and theres a square of sticky gray stuff that was covered in plastic.. Is this factory thermal paste? Do I still need to apply my Artic Silver?

Thanks

Stick with the factory paste. Anyone who tells you need Artic Silver or similar is talking out their %^&$.

Kinda like thinking your car runs better on higher octane than regular. People fall for it and some people make lotsa money from it.

You're wrong when it comes to older heatsinks since some of them are thermal pads which has relatively poor conductivity to thermal paste.
And some pastes which normally come with heatsinks don't come close to AS5 performance. If you don't bother with another 3-5deg then it doesn't matter.

And if you want to apply AS5, you have to remove that gray gunk. And you have to take care not to scratch the hs or the whole things will just end up worse.
