factory O.C.ed / aftermarket cooled 660ti vs. reference 670

I can currently get a reference model PNY GTX 670 for $329 and it's $309 after mail in rebate. My question is how does a factory O.C.ed 660ti with non reference cooler compare to a stock GTX 670 since they are essentially the same price. Also, never owned a PNY brand vid card so a little weary. I'm currently using a S.C. EVGA GTX 660 non to model. Was either going to grab another 660 and SLI for an improvement or just putting the 660 non to in my mini rig I take on trips, and get a single 660ti, but when I saw this 670 for the same price as a souped up 660ti, I kind of wondered.

I play W.o.W. Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, knights of the old republic, Skyrim, and occasionally new Hitman game and sleeping dogs.

Also, don't want to get a vid card set up my cpu would bottleneck. It's a i5 2500K currently o.c.ed to 4.3 ghz on liguid cooling.

I play at 1080p with all the eye candy turned up. If I go with the PNY 670 I'll have to decide soon as its a lmited time price.

Always go for the better card if the non-reference version is halfway to the next tier, IMO.

You can overclock a nice souped up 660 Ti, or you can have the non-overclocked 670 which would be equal to the 660 Ti overclocked, but which you can then overclock further.

I would say 670 reference.

Though I would prefer a 7950 reference over a 670 reference/oc.

No where did I ask about a 7950. I actually owned a 7950, and sent it back a months ago because my 660 was getting better performance in the games I play. I'm not for one company or the other. So instead of trying to hop on here and be a fan boy or trolling and trying to put a plug for team red, could we please stick to what the original question was.

Yea, so for i cant find a definite review. Some say its loud and others say its not. The problem is none of the quick reviews I've read have stated what kind of case they have and what fans/cooling their using. This can also determine how "loud" a graphics card can be. I have an Antec 900 case, so I don't think keeping it cool will be an issue. Just not sure because I haven't found a solid review. The only reason I was considering PNY is because I thought a gtx 670 with a lifetime warranty for $309 sounded like a good deal

No where did you mention you previously owned a 7950. Chill out...he was just offering a suggestion. You might notice that he answered your original question first before making the suggestion.

That said, I'd go with the GTX 670.

I am chilled. I said I wasn't for one company or the other.

I shouldn't have to disclose if I previously owned a 7950 as that had NOTHING to do do with the original posting. The truth is Nvida products perform better on blizzard tittles. I know for a fact becuase my GTX 660 non-ti blew away the 7950 on blizzard titles that's why I got rid of it. I didn't disclose that because I wasn't trying to come across as saying Nvidia was supperior. I didn't disclose that I had previously owned a 7950 because in my particular situation, and Nvidia solution is better. So in the interest of keeping the topic simple I stuck with what I really needed to know and not my life history with previous video cards.

That being said Nvidia is not always the best solution for everyone. It boils down to the individual's needs. I was asking between a 660ti and 760.

So yes hopping on a topic asking between a question about two Nvidia products and putting a plug for card from another brand that has nothing to do with the original post is trolling or being a fanboy. I'm not hopping on threads asking about a 7950 and putting a plug in for a 670. It's just simple etiguette.

And once again I will say that I am chilled :)

Even if replacing the cooler with an aftermarket one, I'd say the 670 is worth it in the long run.

And to OP: Mentioning your previous experiences w/ AMD in a single sentence in the original post would make the forums friendlier.

My previous experience with AMD is irrelavent when I specifically asked the difference between 2 cards. I COULD have said I owned a 3870 5 years ago (I actually did) and that is previous experience with AMD. The point is my previous experience with AMD has NOTHING to do with comparing the 2 cards I originally asked about. So yes popping up in a forum asking about 2 nvidia cards and plugging an AMD card is trolling. PERIOD. And now we have digressed from the original question so lets get back on track.

I'm not sure accusing someone of being a troll or fan boy because they offered a potential, very relevant alternative (after answering your original question) that they had no way of knowing whether or not you had thought of is considered chilled out, but to each his own. :p

We're just trying to help you out here by making sure you're considering all options. It's as simple as that. No one is trolling or trying to plug any particular product, and it would be wise not to jump to negative conclusions so quickly. Now that we know you have already tried the AMD alternative and have specific, legitimate reasons for wanting Nvidia this round, we can easily move on and provide you the best help we can. Having that information first hand is very valuable when you're asking others for assistance.

If the PNY GTX 670 is indeed a reference card, I can't see why it should be any more or less loud than a typical GTX 670. I see no reason to shy away from the PNY brand, especially if it's a reference card. I've had good experiences using their products in computers for friends and family, and the GTX 670 stock should outperform most factory overclocked GTX 660 TIs on an aggregate scale.

OP, I ask this genuinely, why ask for suggestions and then attack anyone who offers them as a fanboy troll? Take a step back here and analyze your behavior.

That said, I'd take a reference card 670 over an oc 660ti @ equal pricing. You can always attempt to overclock/mod the 670. Another good option is to use an alternative e-mail and sign up for newegg & tigerdirect special offers and wait for the card you're looking for to go on sale.

Lowest price 670 @ newegg is $360 before rebate. For that price I'm sure you could scoop up a custom 7970, with better performance. Before you call me a fanboy, my only issue with nvidia is pricing.

I wasted money on a 670 MSI Twin Frozr IV because it was the cheapest 670 in stock at MicroCenter (and they were out of 7950's as that is actually what I went there for). I'm glad I did - this non-reference cooling design is super effective! 28c idle and max I've hit on load is 62c, most commonly tops out around 58c. Now I don't feel like it was wasted money.

That said you could probably buy a reference 670 and a custom cooler for cheaper, but I'm not comfortable that I wouldn't screw my warranty.

EDIT:

26c right now. *giggles*

Hodge did you look into the card that I posted about? Its got a rebate that puts it near the same price of the PNY 670, I know the rebate works, I bought 2 660 non ti cards from Galaxy and got my rebate in 2 weeks via an American Ex giftcard. TigerDirect Link
