Fact or Fiction Windows slows down due to low disk space

Someone I know was recently telling me that Windows slows down due to
low disk space. I wasn't sure if it was true or not. In my mind I can only imagine it
slowing down if the computer doesn't have much ram and if there isn't enough space for the
swap file to be effective.

Is this fact or fiction?

Low disk space certainly isn't going to speed things up. It also depends on what you call "low disk space". I've seen a Windows Server keep running with only 12 MB of free disk space. But they couldn't print large documents anymore because there wasn't enough space on the hard drive to hold the documents for the print spooler.

It's been my experience that low disk space slows Windows down. I prefer to keep 20% free if at all possible.

I have seen low disk space have cause slowness down on it as well, and on top of that machines that have not been defragged in ages as well

Yes, it slows Windows down. Had a few machines at work that had errant programs begin writing dumps to the hard drive until it was completely full, 0 bytes left. Users would be unable to print emails, open applications, etc. In some cases, they were unable to log in entirely.
