Facial Paralysis

My friend just called and told me her father developed facial paralysis and disappeared and went off to look for him. Ive done a little reading on this, but does this condition affect your mental state as well? I only saw symptoms of what physically happens when it develops. Appearantly her father has had this before and it went away? I don't know too much about this, so any information would be helpful.

My neighbor had something like this - I think it was some kind of viral infection of a nerve in his face. Don't recall exactly - it was a few years ago. They thought he was having a stroke at first. He's mostly recovered, but one side of his face kind of sags a bit.

Sounds like Bell's palsy. I've had it for the past few years. Mentally, it doesn't affect you. But it can make you really dizzy which can make you look like you have some sort of major brain problem.

BTW, everyone probably knows this, but just in case: if you develop any kind paralysis on only one side of your body, get to the emergency room ASAP. Quick treatment is extremely important with both strokes and Bell's palsy. I'd probably be cured now if my parents hadn't waited four days before taking me to the doctor.

..somebody at work had this. One side of his face drooped for a few months. Came out of the blue. Woke up with it. I hear nicotine(he was a smoker) may induce this condition.

Yes, it does sound like Bell's Palsy, and from what I know of Bell's Palsy (had a friend in college suffer from it) Time is not a factor. Her's was stress induced and she fully recovered from it. I don't think she went to the doctor right away. Now admintedly it affected her for a few months before she got the feeling back. Now I am not saying you shouldn't go straight to a Dr., because I think you should. But it might not be the end of the world.

dont' think it affects you mentally but getting it may make you do things you normally wouldn't. Just feeling indifferent or what not.
