Facebook Chief Mark Zuckerberg Wants More Internet Regulation

Facebook Inc. FB 0.69% Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg called for global regulators to take a “more active role” in governing the internet, among his strongest remarks yet on regulation that come after more than a year of intense scrutiny over missteps at the social network.

In an op-ed published Saturday on the websites of the Washington Post and Ireland’s Independent, Mr. Zuckerberg said such intervention is vital to protect both the welfare of users and the fundamental values of an open internet.

He said the U.S. needed European-style privacy regulations and called on regulators globally to set clearer rules regarding “harmful content, election integrity, privacy and data portability.”

Of course he does. Offloading his problems, barriers to entry for smaller companies to compete with him, who knows what else. America should not be taking advice from Mr Zuckerberg nor do we need more government in our digital lives.

So GDPR is a bad thing? Protecting privacy seems to be a different issue from the other regulations he was calling for.

UC just wants to watch the world burn so of course he wants facebook to be a means to accomplish that.

Zuckerberg clearly sees the threat in that so he's reaching out to our govt for some guidance in how to not play that role. Meanwhile, he's doing what he can on his own.

To be honest I have not been impressed with Facebook’s performance at all. The company seems to suffer from a lack of internal controls.

Whenever they try to do something about it the whining reaches epic proportions, particularly among the Alt-right. Poor Alex Jones! Poor Nazis! Poor flat earthers & anti-vaxxers! Poor right wing conspiracy theorists! So persecuted!
