Face Recognition Tech A Failure in Tampa

Tampa, Florida, Police Department used the Visionics crowd surveilance kit in June and July 2001, and dumped it in August.

According to this Registre article, the kit made 14 "positive" matches over a 4 day period of surveilance, but all 14 were false alarms, not a crook among them.

The Registre Piece

This was just in Tampa. Now, I wonder how much of tax payer money is going into buying this useless technology for airports.

Tampa's 'revolutionary' ideas always end up in their face - The 'state of the art' parking meters (which were so bad, they had 'em removed), the Devil Rays (near extinction), the free use orange-painted bicycles downtown (idea was stolen from Westcoast cities & in the end all the bikes were stolen by thieves), the Bucs' new stadium (they had taxpayers pay for it under the guise that a significant % would go to education [didn't happen]) and soon, the Tampa-to-Orlando speed train/tram. Nobody wanted the Face Recognition technology but the gov't went all for it as usual. This city needs to understand that it ain't no San Fran.

Most of what you mentioned not only did not happen in Tampa it didn't even happen in the sane county. Get your facts straight before you start talking about my crappy city. The Bucs stadium deal is better than you think. There is actually a clause written in that if Malcom Glazer does not pay property taxes on the stadium like he is supposed to the Tampa Sports Athority will cover the bill from it's budget which is funded by taxpayer money. And to think the city is shocked that Glazer is not going to pay. Why would he? It is in the contract that he doesn't have to.
