Lets say that there is no photography. Mirrors do exist so you
can see what you look like, but you can't save a copy for later viewing.

do you think we would remember what we looked like as kids?
would you recognize yourself if someone showed you your pic?

First, I'd ask "wow, who did such a great job with that small painting."
Then, I'd say "Yes, that looks just like the painting of me from when I was a little kid."
 
People who are separated from their loved ones for an extended period of time are often disappointed to find that they can't seem to form a picture in their mind of what they looked like. The secret is to remember them in context such as a visit to a favorite place or a great date. This from a friend who was shot down in the South Pacific during WWll and survived 66 days in a rubber raft.
