With all the modern advances in appliances I've still got a cavity in the middle of the laundry washing machine that "dispenses" fabric softener. It's that little thing that pops up/down during the cylce on the plunger/rotator thing-a-ma-bob. Maybe I should RTFM, but I've NEVER used it.

I use either the provided washing machine dispenser or use one of those downy balls if the washing machine is lacking a dispenser.

My washer doesn't have one. The washers we had in college had them, and I used the cup. I always washed it out first though, because those things got NASTY inside.

I don't use fabric softener anymore. My clothes feel noticeably better when I use it, but I think fabric softener is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist - I've never felt discomfort due to the lack of softness of my fabrics.

Also - isn't fabric softener supposed to be added during the rinse cycle? I thought that was why they have the dispenser - to delay mixing it.
