From my point of view this is milking the game. They are basically telling you that you aren't buying the whole story or whole game because they plan to release more. I have no problem with releasing add-on content after the game is complete, shipped and people have played through it. I do take issue with companies who use the business model of "pay for part now, and you'll get another part to buy in the future".

Maybe I'm bias.

They are moving to episodic releases so they can get better content out, faster.

Hmm... where have I heard this line before? I could have swore a company did this with a much more beloved franchise and became the new Duke Nukem Forever (which doesn't even work as a joke anymore because DNF actually came out).

You've heard it before from half life 2 :D Massive fail of episodic content  I think the only good example was lucas arts with their remakes...but even then, that is closer to a new development cycle because enviornment art for each game had to be generated...

I would think from a SW perspective it might make sense to do episodic content with the following:
+ Great set of validated modular tools that let you create your world very quickly
+ Minimal & quick means to debug (which is where validation may help, because it'll force you to search for all those corner cases if you do it right)
+Reuse of most models and textures

If all of the following apply, episodic content largely comes down to creating an engaging story. to prevent things feeling rehashed, maybe you have a couple new models and textures to add to an existing library.

Not a SW developer, but I work with them so I hear their viewpoints...so take what I have written with a grain of salt.
