Looking for an open world-y RPG/action game to keep me busy until Skyrim comes out and I was thinking about getting either Dead Island or Fable 3. The games are obviously quite different, but seem quite similar in ways too. Which one would you choose?

Fable 3 is nowhere near open world. It's incredibly linear. If you want open world then stay away.

Dead Island, most of the problems with it have been fixed now, well at least it's not as bad as it was at release.

Dead Island.
I decided not to listen to the people saying it was a buggy mess and bought it.
It works fine for me (weird small graphical glitches here and there, nothing major) and I'm really enjoying it.

neither...

Mafia 2 / prototype would own both of them if u like open worlds..
Deus Ex is also partially open world.
Witchers 2 is also good as well, but its limited in open worlds... it has a directed path u need to follow.

Dead Island is best enjoyed as coop.
Single player, your gonna rot your head from all the weapon fixing + repetitive crap you'll always end up doing.

What? Mafia 2 isn't an open world. That's one of the biggest gripes about the game. It's a fun game but definitely not an open world. I read there was a mod for the game that made it an open world but 2K went around and made everyone remove the mods for the game.

I'd go with Dead Island, I'm having a pretty good time with it. Bashing zombies hasn't gotten old yet after about 20+ hours.

u have almost no time limit to complete sub quests.
You are allowed to travel anywhere in the island.
Its like a different version of grand theft auto.

How is it not open world in contrast to dead island?

Not sure what a mod would help... it's open world there's just nothing to do in that world. You always had one place to go in town and nothing else to really occupy your time. Unless the mod added side missions I don't see what it could fix. Nothing really stopped you from driving around town as much as you wanted.

It's just a boring game after a few hours.

F3 was a pos. Really. I know nothing about Dead Island but can guarentee it is better than fable 3. Peter should be shot, repaired then shot again, repeat.

You're locked into the missions in Mafia 2. There are no side quests. In DI you're free to roam around completing side missions. Doesn't mean they're all interesting. A lot of them are fetch missions, but you do have options. That said, Mafia is usually around $5 when it goes on sale, so it could be a cheaper diversion.

the game is designed for coop from what i was playing.

Its the same thing.... you hack and slash, repair, and try to look for stuff.

To be best said, resident evil 5 would own it in gameplay + content + coop.
But Dead Island has a bit more free play, in which u can travel all over the place.

But the game isnt much without a buddy playing with you from what i was playing.

And yes ive completed most of the side missions + finished the game. I wanted to see if it was worth buying on steam so i could do coop with him.

Ultimately, i think i'll wait for it to go on sale b4 getting dead island and then pray the Coop community is still alive when i do have it.

Another vote for Dead Island. My wife and I are completely addicted to co-op.

Fallout New Vegas or Just Cause 2, both are also open world games that will keep you busy for a while. New Vegas is a stat-based RPG based on the same engine as Oblivion, JC2 is a third-person shooter (like GTA but much larger).

Its Just Cause 2.

Sorry i was mistaking my mafia games.. :p

Just Cause 2 is a great game... very open world which is why i was getting confused on the statements on mafia.

I got the games mixed up.

I almost picked up Mafia 2 when it was on Steam sale a few weeks ago, but I held off because people specifically said it wasn't open world, it has no replay value, and the ending sucks. Seems like a shame that a developer would create a nice open world and then not let you explore it.
