I'm looking at trading my 2009 F150 reg cab and 2011 4Runner in to consolidate/eliminate debt.

I am looking at a 2018 XLT 4WD with the 5.0L and 302a package (heated seats, sync, XM)... I had a Toyota dealership come in below that quote on Crewmax SR5, but with the 4.6L.

I think the F150 is a better deal based on hp and just about everything else. I just really like the styling of the Tundra still... especially the roll down back glass. Opinions please.

I think part of the resale argument is that Toyota hasn't had as many radical changes to body design over the past 11 years. The 2009-2014 vs 2015-2019 F150s are pretty distinct...Ford also devalues faster because they typically are abused more readily. I don't see many Tundra work trucks (fleet sales)...why is that?

In any case, price, trim, mpg ,and horsepower are making this tough....the interior of the F150 beats Tundra, but I like my 4Runner well enough and the styling is about the same as Tundra.

My instinct says most blue collar workers / people using fleet vehicles are too "MURIKUH!" to drive Toyotas, though I will be the first to admit I have no data to back it.

I've seen a few contractors in tundras, but Toyota really doesn't target stripped down trucks like that. Toyota trucks in general have very good resale figures for a variety of reasons, but let's also look at sales. F150s sell about 900k units a year, the tundra about 100k. As such it seems a lot easier to get great deals on the American trucks.

I'd have a hard time getting a new tundra right now. The current version is over a decade old at this point and it's showing against the strong competition. All other competitors have iterated on theirs numerous times since then while Toyota has mainly done some minor engine changes and cosmetic updates.

Honestly the Tundra is a bit of a turd compared to American trucks purely because Toyota can get away with minimal investment and still move product.

The fuel economy is atrocious and like everyone has said, it's an old truck.

But I am curious how trading in two older cars for a new one makes good financial sense.

if the tundra was the 5.7, Id opt for that. Given it is the 5.0 vs the 4.6, id probably opt for the ford given all other things equal. i think build quality and long term reliability is better on the tundra. we have leased our 4th tundra since 2008 and recently got a 2018 xlt sport f150 (with the 3.5). the tundra is more of a truck. the ford is more of a mall crawler and is more comfortable around town. the tundra gets criticized for being "old" but the fact is, it just works, and does everything a truck should do. Getting into both vehicles, the tundra feels better built to me....

all that said, my experience is with two engines you aren't considering. the 3.5 ford is something special and the 5.7 is pretty stout as well. I do not like the 10 spd tranny in the fords though. too many gears, and feels like they are always searching/shifting.

i would say drive both and buy the one you like. the 4.6 and 5.0 are known to be good motors. I think toyota has a tundra with the 4.6 that has drvien a million miles

At around 250k miles and 15 years the F150's start to have problems with hoses and gaskets going bad. That's the point at which I buy a new one and give my old one away.
