with the season starting this weekend officially i'm kinda torn about it... on the one hand I love F1 racing and have watched it semi-religiously since i was a kid, AND, im all for fair competition (despite being a fellow German and Schumacher fan!)... BUT i think Mosley and the FIA are taking this waaay to far... :|

2 rules that particularly irk me are:

- not being able to change tires between qualifying and racing, unless something happens that could put the pilot at risk, like a flat tire or losing too much grip or some other things that i forget how to translate from portuguese (read in the news this morning lol)... thats so STUPID and SUBJECTIVE... they claim racers and teams will be penalized but cmon this is just dumb, one of the best parts of strategy is tire changes...

- having to keep the same engine for 2 entire races/practice sessions... unless it gets busted, OR the racer doesn't complete the race... again this is so SUBJECTIVE and sure they claim ppl will get penalized but cmon they are gonna end up turning this into the IRL or something... :| :| :|

I'm with Stumps.

I have been both just a fan and involved "hands-on" in local racing for over 25 years (raced go-karts as a kid, worked on pit-crews, and worked as a track official). Stock cars have traditionally been my favorite (small local tracks have the best racing!) but I enjoy watching just about all forms of motorsports (NASCAR, NHRA, IRL, CART, etc....)

For some reason, F1 just has never really grabbed my attention as much as other sanctions.

IMHO, the IRL is the best "big show" going. That being said - if you really want to see some good "doorhandle to doorhandle" racin' - get out and support your local short track (dirt or aphalt). THAT is where the action really is!

I think the engine rule is ok. It'll make things a whole lot harder for all the teams as they'll have to add a bunch of weight to all their motors and basically redesign them all.

The perfect engine these days would explode as the car crossed the finish line. Now it's going to be more about reliability which is going to be interesting.

I'd like to see a rule similar to the touring car championship where they have three races, but the cars that finished in front in the first race have ballast added to them and have to start in reverse order ie the car that finished sixth is on pole in the second race, fith -> 2nd, etc.

I'd love to see racing with no complex rules. For example, define a maximum footprint of the cars and obviously have no weaponry/devices that interfere other cars, and of course safety regulations and leave it at that. I think it would make for some really interesting designs. One team might have a nimble, lightweight F1-style car whereas a second might have six wheels and big fans like the "sucker car" of the 70's. Ferrari wouldn't be able to get away so quickly when you could just slap on an even larger turbo, etc.

just a thought....

Stock cars are cool, I'm big in to drag racing, not any of the stupid ass street stuff either, I'm talking about proper strip action, I also have attemped some streetcar based circuit racing, it was a real hoot.
I have a lot of friends that are in to stock car racing, mainly dirt circuit stuff, it's a lot of fun to watch.

LOL thats a pretty crazy idea loic2003 but i dont really think it would fly :p i like certain things about the IRL in that most cars are fairly similar and thus the whole thing is more competitive i guess, but cmon the ovals get old fast...

as far as the engine i rule i guess its fair enough, building for a balance of stability/performance as opposed to just hardcore, unstable, performance actually seems kinda smart! also, it would give a better chance to lower-budget teams that can't afford to build and rebuild their engines as much as ferrari and mclaren and bmwwilliams etc...

now cmon... the tire rule??? thats just stupid IMO. i'm not sure how i feel about different tire manufacturers... did Bridgestone pull out yet? because it can definitely be an advantage and once the contract is signed teams are stuck with the same tire manufacturer for the entire season - if not longer.
i still think that removing tire changes from the pit-stop equation will make for less strategic races, but might just contribute to better competitive racing because again, the teams with the best pit crews happen to be the top-tier teams anyway...

been thinking about the same idea for quite some time

onli limits would be demensions, safety and perhaps weight

there was a class of racing that was similar to having almost no rules..it was called GROUP A in the ATCC, we ended up having 800hp nissian skylines racing around our tracks during the late 80's early 90's as well as plenty of other exotics. sadly one local manufacturer with a big wallet complained about how it was making their cars uncompetitive(the skylines and ford serria's could lap them by over 6 laps)and the class was banned for ever:(

its not so much what the rules are its the fact that they chnged them AGAIN and will probably change them mid season AGAIN

its futile to try curb speeds with all these silly rules about wings, and diffusers etc.....engineers will find a way round it, thats what they get payed to do, solve problems.

i will be watchin the race live at 1:55am when the show goes out here on ITV1, but i may jus go to bed early if it looks to be a schumacher white wash.

They've been talking about these rule changes for a long time. I'm happy to see them being put in place. I don't even bother watching F1 because its not much of a race. I can't remember the last time I saw an actual pass in F1 (I don't watch much lately because I haven't had Speed Channel for a few years). The races were so boring because you knew who would win and there wouldn't be any real racing going on. Its like taking an F1 car out in Gran Turismo 3 when no one else has one.

Some other rules I've heard about were no launch control, no changes to the car from the pit (while racing), and things like no traction control. Have these been implemented in any way?

I am excited ... mclaren looked good yesterday ... the new regulations are just that new regulations (no biggie IMHO) - good engineers will always find a way ...

as far as the tires rule go ... its 60% rain on sat and clear on sunday ... should make it interesting ...

what i dont like is how they let minardi race ... what abut rules and regualtions ...

Go Ferrari !

p.s. the yellow cars need sponsors .. they look like orphans :(

hahaha poor minardi... like its not bad enough that they use ferrari's engines from the previous season...LOL :p
now they will be screwed cause they will have to seriously tweak it or build one of their own..

i think it only a matter of time until some rich mofo takes them yellow boys under his wing and makes them great again! hell, if nobody does it and they still exist by the time im a millionaire i might just have something to say about that. :p

GO SCHUMACHER!

sucks

they could have made a new rule then, the same design can only be used for 2 years max so design teams are forced to redesign their cars... muahhaha... I lack sleep ok
