I have had about 5 power surges or shut offs in the past week.I know this must be hell on the computer. Currently I have a good Belkin surge protector on there (no UPS). I guess I will be needing a UPS with line conditioning (AVR) and filtering pretty soon. I am looking for one under $80 US.

This one caught my eye, it is $80 at Sams.

I was given an older APC Back-UPS 650. It doesn't have the best battery life, but I can't complain due to the cost. ;)

You're going to need to size your UPS based on what you plan to run off of it. If you've got a large CRT and a powerful system, you might only get 8 to 10 minutes off of that UPS, but that should keep you going through the average brownout.

Tripp-Lite makes some decent line conditioners as well, if you don't want the backup power. I have a 1200W one that I use for a pair of computers. I found that with the crappy power lines that come to my house, my computers' stability also improved dramatically.

I will be powering a 350w PSU computer w/2600+ AMD + 17-19" LCD + 17" CRT (crt does not need backup power)

I only need enough back up power for the unit to save and close all my programs, so 5-10mins would be fine.

That UPS is a good buy at $80.00.

It should give you about 30 minutes of backup time with your specification. If your CPU is 100% loaded due to DC, then your runtimes will be shorter.

In any case it will be much better than having no UPS at all! :)

Most decent UPS units have software for monitoring battery time and can issue a shutdown even if you are not there. I like that.......:)
