F:\ is my HDD letter, how can I change it back to C:\ ?

I just got my new PC built for me, set it to boot from CD from the BIOS and it automatically installed Windows for me. But the problem I have is that my HDD is on F:\ for some reason and some programs specifically require C:\ to be the main HDD. Just a few things:

1. I only have one HDD, a SATA Seagate 250 GB /w NCQ
2. My Mitsumi All in One "Floppy" Drive is on A:\ (I believe) and my BenQ DW1640 CD/DVD drive is on D:\ .
3. C:\ as of now is currently nothing. It says C:\ and E:\ are "Removable Disc" in My Computer.

If you guys have any insight into this, I'd appreciate any input you can provide. I'd really like to avoid reformating, but if I have to, I will. Just tell me what I would need to do first.

Thanks,

~IG

which programs specifically need C:? Isn't there an option to change the default drive during the install?

While it is possible to hack the registry to change the OS drive letter it's not recommended. You'll be better off doing a clean install. Be sure to unplug any USB devices and any additional hard drives.

I would guess this is either partioning problems or USB devices seen during the OS install (thumb drive, card readers, etc).

Changing the drive letter to C: from F: will crash just about everything you have in there. Why? well becasue every application you have on there and every other internal applications will look for files on the F: drive, and it will not find anything of need on the F: drive because it's the C: drive now. So doing a new install is a much better option for you, unless someone comes up with a better solution.

right click my computer, then manage, disk management, right click your drives, and then change drive letter and paths. dunno if it works for C:, but it changes the other letters 🙂

The only solution I found to this was to start the computer with a Windows 98/Me cd/floppy, go into fdisk and create a partition(s) that way (you'd have to use the windows me version of fdisk cos of your large HDD).

Then when you next setup windows - ie booting of the winxp cd - your hard drive should then appear as C: and then u can format and install and it will keep it as C:.

Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Norton Partition Magic can change the drive letter for you, but I wouldn't recommend it. A clean install is the best way to go as others have posted.

Been through this issue many times. Only true permanent solution was to reinstall. As you mentioned, you'll experience some quirky things going on because many of your existing stuff is hardcoded to look for everything on c:\
At this point, you'll save more time just reinstalling than trying to fix this uphill battle.
