I think you're right. OP, why don't ya try the latest Nero? Free trial and ya don't lose your origional. There's about a zillion revsions of Nero. They don't do it because they want to.

Nero 7 is not even compatible with Vista, only Nero 8+ with Vista. However, it still sucks, the Nero codecs really mess things up for me, I can't use it. I use Nero Lite for burning disks only.

Ok, download Process Explorer from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/techn...s/processexplorer.mspx

It will show you what is using the memory. You can double click (or right click and choose properties) any process and choose the Performance Graph to see how much memory it is using. I'll bet its Nero's NMIndexSercice.exe

Okay, I tried burning something at work with Nero on a DVD. Is slow as ever. I'll post back when I find a fix. The OP was right all alone, it's Nero. I couldn't do anything.

I have a Dell Optiplex 745 4gigs of RAM.

yeah, it was working fine...and billb2, it's not NMIndexSercice.exe, i've already disabled that...I mentioned already that I am running resource monitor and it's the recode.exe; when the program starts you can see the mem usage increasing...

UPDATE: it seems to work RANDOMLY which is even more strange...sometimes a disk works, sometimes a disk doesn't work...I don't know, maybe it's the movies I have? but it's just strange.

I'm guessing it's Nero at this point as well, and I suppose I'll just have to go out and buy a program that actually works. Thanks everyone for your help though.

Keep us updated on the progress.

It would be interesting to see if the latest free two week trial of nero solves anything.

to the OP, CD Burner XP is a very capable piece of software to burn cd's, dvd's, etc. buying one does not make it better.

You updated the drive's firmware from the lightscribre site. Why did you do such thing? I suggest you use a firmware from the manufacturer's site. BTW, you didn't mention which model your drive is.
