in Round 1 of the Pipe Masters, they were running
4 man heats.

a Brazilian guy named Neco Padaratz paddled into
the same wave as Sunny Garcia. they collided &
Sunny got the interference. this left Sunny in
3rd or 4th, and Neco in 1st.

Sunny just got out of prison for tax evasion, and
was trying to perform well at Pipe so he can get
a wild card to get back on tour, without going
through the minor leagues, aka the WQS.

first time i've seen 2 guys fight at a professional
surfing tournament. the Brazilian guy got a police
escort to protect him from Sunny.

Sunny's not a guy to screw with. There's normally just a lot of verbal shit going on, but surfing is generally a very terriorial event. I can't paddle into some of the hotter spots without buddies of mine that are considered locals there. Same as if buddies of mine came to my local breaks. If I do, i'm not given a chance to get a wave and if I snake someone I'm screwed for the rest of the day. Its a culture with rules you can't ignore without consiquences. I've walked back up to the parking lot to see 'GO HOME beloved patriot' written on people's cars with wax, the craziest was a tire slashing but that's more rare. Most surf videos now show at least one full on fight either on the beach or in lineup.

Sunny seems to be really losing it, but I wonder if this was a publicity stunt though? Being the "Bad boy" of a sport can be good for the career sometimes.

I recall Ken Bradshaw being put in the hospital a couple decades back, by a big Hawiian guy that said he gets paid to kill people like him i.e. non-locals that surf the wrong spots. That story was related by Ken, in an issue of Surfer many years ago.

Sad, but true. Why the hell someone wants to be so territorial is just beyond me.

New Smyrna Beach Inlet can get that way. I have been surfing most my life, and I can understand why they are like that even though I don't agree with them.

1. People who have zero business in the premiere breaks, snaking great surfers who are literally engaged in their job.

2. Those same people, snaking, or otherwise creating hazards/obstacles for experienced surfers who are following proper etiquette in the line-up.

3. Having someone paddle out, and think that when that next set wave shows up, there isn't any reason they shouldn't paddle for it, despite the fact that everyone else in the water has established themselves in the line-up, and are again, following good etiquette.

4. Having expensive boards dinged and gouge because some n00b did something completely unexpected and foolish.

There are always breaks where n00b s are more than welcome, and experienced surfers will offer helpful advice. Top rated spots are not that place. Ask questions@the surf shop, or of surfers on the beach, most of us are friendly and helpful. :light:

That's so cool.
How these babies can think that another wave isn't going to come along is beyond me. I'm not talking about competition.
Add to that the phoney "spiritual bs " these wankers spew when asked "why", it's just pathetic. These are the same idiots that rage on the road.

There are spots here that I won't surf because of the dickheads who surf there regularly. It's usually just a few guys too. I'd say that most surfers aren't like that.

I agree it is a personality flaw that shows up everywhere, not just the water. I can't imagine that crowd claiming to be soul surfers though, never heard a thug say that before. Soul surfers would be the first to be kind and helpful IME.

QFT...those that don't 'understand' this haven't been surfers or anything else where you are waiting on nature to produce something that happens at sometimes long intervals.

I have witnessed lots of beach fights. The whole 'val' (valley) thing was a pretty big war between surfers.

Ahhh locals. I try to avoid that shit. I hate the mentality. More often than not, it's the "better" or more experienced surfers who snake and drop in. At trestles it's really bad...they feel that just because you're not going to shred the wave like they will, they can drop in or shoulder hop you. Pisses me off to no end.
