Thanks for the stats Hyperfocal!

Congrats to all the MMs 😎

Welcome to fhoffnar, miser, and MSalseda! Three new members in one day... that's as many as the DPCs have added all week! Even though it looks like we're going to get passed by the P2Ps tomorrow, our future stay in 27th is looking shorter and shorter each day 🙂

OMG, I am 1337!!!!!wtf lol

Thx for the stats.

Some of my improved production is adding crunchers, other improvements is from adding flags. I'm using the -forceSSE flags on most of my amd boxes and the -adv flag (that's incomplete) on highest speed boxes and multi-proc boxes so that they take advantage of advanced units, some of which are beta.

Perhaps we can tune our team by assisting members with flag setup, client config and the like? We might improve our efficiency by a percent or two and reduce our overtake dates of the next 4 teams.

Ideas?

Welcome to the TeAm, fhoffnar, miser and MSalseda! It's great to have you folding with us 🙂

Congratulations to the Milestone Makers!

Welcome to the 10k Club - lobadobadingdong 🙂 (when I checked the stats yesterday you had exactly 10,000 🙂 )

Welcome to the Top 100 - Mark_F_Williams!

Thanks for the stats, Hyperfocal 🙂

Thanks Gleem I saw the exact 10k yesterday myself too when I got home from work. I'll probably switch my wifes pc over to F@H this weekend to give us another Athlon XP 1700+ boost.

Hey Gravity, good idea!

The -forceSSE flag (only for some AMD procs) will not be used in the next version (5). I guess -forceasm will work for both AMD and Intel procs. These flags force the client to ignore how it was shutdown. Without these flags, if you overclock and a WU causes your rig to crash (or a game or anything or you don't shutdown properly), the client will restart without optimizations, which will slow it down drastically. If you use the flag on a system that is not stable, the WU will continue to crash your rig! (You will have to lower your OC!) Be warned - Prime95 stability is not as stable as Gromac WU stable! I was 24 hours Prime95 stable on my overclock and a beta Big WU would not finish!!

The -advmethods flag can get you sent to different servers, look here under the Programs column, for a WU. When you use this flag you are agreeing to work on late beta stage WUs and any problems that might involve. This flag used to help get Gromacs WUs, not as much anymore. Since the points adjustment there is not much difference in points per day between Tinkers and Gromacs, at least for Intel P4 3.0C, in my experience. I am checking points per day for each WU on one rig, so far I can't reach any conclusions, other than there can be some differences between WUs of the same project.

That's right GLeeM, like you I got burned when overclocking on some of the newer Gromacs WUs. I had my 2.2GHz processor clocked up to 2.6, (and vcore bumped from 1.5 up to 1.75, the max for my BIOS) and everything on the machine (Sandra, Prime95, 3DMark03) was scorchingly fast except for Gromacs WUs which would simply not run:frown: I've since gone back down to 2.4@1.625 and I haven't had any problems all week. Now this is just playing with the open multiplier on these new FX chips, I guess I could squeeze a little more out of this box with some bus overclocking but from what I've read elsewhere the HTT bus on the AMD64 platform gets kind of finicky when you mess with it.

As far as the points adjustment, I notice a big difference for me between Tinkers and Gromacs. I mentioned earlier this week in the forum that I think it's because Stanford only has one benchmark machine, a P4 running Linux, and anyone not on that platform (I run Athlon/Windows) is going to be off the mark. I average about 9 points per hour on Tinkers but only between 5-6 pph for Gromacs WUs, and that is with -forceSSE on.

Welcome to the new members!!

It amazes me to see people with more than 100K points! :Q How the heck do you get that many? You've gotta have crack racks like SovietSolider!!! I.E. a WALL of racks.

Go TeamAT!!!

MichaelD, I only have an average of 8 machines for the 2 weeks, and I am up to 13-14k ! at that rate it would take about 3 months to get to 100k. Except my central air is having a problem with 103 heat outside, and 8-9 boxen inside at 3 ghz equiv and the 500 watt Phaser. Yesterday, it couldn't keep the house below 77 ! I have have to tun some of them off, but at least I have a good start.

I have gone into the Log File and seen that before it starts work, it says things like:

"Assembly optimizations on if available."
"Extra SSE boost OK"

I'm also using all the Gromacs stuff....it's done all this automatically. I haven't touched anything.

Am I already all optimized? Can I gain more speed by running all those Command Line commands?

Are they "set and forget" , one-time commands, or do I have to re-enter them for every new WU?

Thanks!!!

me<--#245 and rising!!! 😀

Right click the shortcut that starts FaH, and select Properties from the context menu.

In the Target text box, at the right end of what is in there, add the flags you want. You only need to do this once.

It will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -verbosity 9 -forceasm

You need a space after the path and between each flag and a dash before each flag.

The following is quoted from here: http://folding.stanford.edu/console-userguide.html

-forceasm
Instruct the core to use SSE/3DNow assembly instructions if possible, even if it has previously made the determination that the machine may not be handling this well.

-forceSSE
On machines with an AMD processor, Core_78 gives priority to 3DNow over SSE -- this overrides that. (end quote)

If you add a console version after installing the GUI, you have to run the console in its own directory and you must then use the -local flag on the console.

Thanks, Gleem. If it messes w/the 3D stuff, will this screw up my gaming?

What kind of improvements, time-wise, can I expect? 5%?

MichaelD, the flags only affect the client not the core that does the crunching. The core is probably as good as it can be - hand coded assembly.

The -forceasm flag will force the core to continue using SSE after a crash. If it wasn't shutdown properly the core will assume it was the reason for the crash, and not use SSE optimizations, which will take a lot longer to crunch. Using the flag will cause it to not look at how it was previously shutdown.

If your overclock is the reason for the crash and you have the flag set, it will probably crash again.

Your improvements will be the time savings of not crunching a WU without optimizations turned on when you restart from a crash. If you don't crash, no time savings.

If your OC causes the crash and you restart the WU again from the beginning (over and over again) you will see a loss in pointage.

Gleem, thank you for the detailed info. Well..all my overclocks are stable. I test and retest to ensure that. In fact, I will reduce an OC if there's the slightest hint of instability.

It seems to me that I would have nothing to gain from running these optimizations on my boxes, since they don't crash.

I have been gaining mucho points in a short amount of time...I've only got four boxes crunching. I think I'll leave well enough alone. Go, TeamAT!!!!!

Thanks again. I'm glad to be part of the team. 🙂
