Thanks. Today's random language sympathy getter: LISP. Anybody have experience with this one? It sure can be annoying with all those parenthesis and lists. :|
For example, I had to do a simple program last night which I figured would take me 10 minutes since I had already done two similar. Then reality struck and I had overlooked a case. I ended up working from about 10 - 2 on this one little thing. Yeah, I love LISP.

That sucks. Why do Fortran, Cobol, LISP, and other outdated languages still have to stick around and haunt us? :frown:

Lisp (and it's variants, Scheme for one) still exist because they're widely used in artificial intelligence research. For instance, as the program 'learns,' it can rewrite itself. This is different from just overwriting a database and using the new data. By actually writing new code over old code, the program doesn't get any larger, just 'smarter.' This is similar to how our brain's learn; the brain actually remaps electrical signals. That's as close an analogy as I can think of 😛

As for Fortran and why it didn't go the way of the slide rule, I have no idea 😉 Cobol, however, is still widely used in the commercial sector. As outdated as it is, there's still a ton of machines using it; I suppose because it's cheaper to teach someone Cobol than it is to swap out millions of dollars worth of infrastructure.

Welcome, folders 😀 grats to all the mm's

Yeah, the AI reason is why we are using LISP. It is the grad intro class to AI at UF. I just hate those damn ( )'s around every function. I wish it were more intuitive and you only had to add them when it was needed for clarity. Soon, I will begin my big semester project using LISP. We have to program a little puzzle type game using LISP and eventually implement some sort of intelligence into it. I may be doing AI for a career so it is worth my time to learn it. I plan on learning Prolog too one day which especially intrigues me.
