F@H - service not restarting

Suspecting F@H may have had something to do with the audio quality of my video captures (I found out that it's not) I hit stop in firedaemon to stop the client. After doing a few tests with my captures I went to restart the service. Nothing. I tried starting the console manually, which works fine, though it says it was shutdown improperly last time. I tried blowing the service away and recreating it, which doesn't work. I tried rebooting, no dice. Any advice for getting F@H working again?

what version of F@H did you install in your system? I guess it was a screensaver version. Did you uninstall as you usually do with other program or just remove its folder?

Hmm, sounds like you are using the console version, which is the only one that I know of that will work with FireDaemon. Have you tried starting the Folding@Home service directly from the Service Control Panel (in Computer Management)? If that doesn't work, could you please check your FAHlog.txt and post any information that you feel might be relevant?

jliechty is right, I installed the CLI version. If I try to start it via windows service management I get this error:

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I tried fiddling with the startup time in firedaemon, trying things from 1 to 10000 msec, but I still get the same error.

Any idea how to fix this, because I'm having the same problem now. I don't know what I did to cause it, it was working fine earlier today :(

thanks,
brian

Error 1053 It seems like nothing to do with F@H client. Mostlikely it problem with winXP, after a search from google I've seen this error with different software which will run as service.

I'm not sure if that the causes but try to run under administrator account or If you need to start the service using another user account, make sure that the other user account has administrator privileges

Yeah, I googled the error code too. I've tried running it under several accounts, some with administrator rights and no dice. I can't figure out what I've changed to make the service stop functioning; I'm using a couple of other things that run as a service, and they seem to be working alright.

I'm going to have to start over. In case you missed my reply to the latest stats, my hd tanked and took everything with it (would you believe a pin on the connector became unsoldered?) Hopefully things will be working when I get everything straight.

yeag beatle I saw your post about hdd, I hope you back and folding with us soon.

Brian I'm not sure what version are you using but have you tried to delete the whole F@H folder then re-install and run it as normal, not in service. I'm not sure if this's gonna help you becuz all I know is only for console (no text) and screen saver version.

Yep, that's what I did...its running fine normally now, but I still can't install it as a service. I'm pretty sure I'm running the cli client v 3.24 (if that makes sense, I'm still pretty unsure of what's going on, but i'm trying to learn)

thanks for the help, I'll keep fiddling with it.

I doubt this is pertinent but when I set it up as a service with firedeamon I had to call it FoldingatHome because it wouldn't use the @ symbol. Also after adding the -advmethods -forceasm switches the service stopped working because of course the executable had changed so I edited the service and showed it the new renamed console and it started running again.

Alright, I can't figure out what I've done to make it stop...I've checked and rechecked everything I can think of. No big deal, I'll just have to remember to restart it from now on.

thanks for the help fellas,
brian

I'm back online. Thanks for the link and the help. J, can you add this service install to the "getting started" links? It'd be good for a bump at the least. :)
