So I guess pigs can fly after all.......

Today, I noticed I was crunching a SMP work unit I haven't seen before. P3064

It's valued at 1753 points and seems to give a PPD that is between that given by the two we've been crunching (ad infinitum) for the last several months.

On my machines:

P2653 -> ~2,500
P3064 -> ~2,225
P2665 -> ~2,000

Maybe this means there is going to be some development in the SMP arena ??
(we can hope for a better client while they're at it :p )

You're right!
/me feels silly

My fahmon benchies didn't show it, but I looked on my site stats and apparently I've crunched nearly 50 of them.

Oh well.... came from a good place

Well look on the bright side, Your rigs seem that they do not need to be baby sat. :D

Looks like you only check them occasionally. Nice! :)

Thank you for the silver lining!

You're right though, they are pretty much holding their own in 'set it and forget it' mode. :)

I broke down, bought the hole saw and made a 120mm fan mount (exhaust) on the case doors adjacent to the video cards. They are staying below 65C and I havn't seen an EUE in weeks from any of them.

The SMP clients haven't had an EUE in forever either. Ever since I quit trying to run two at a time on WindowsXP (and apparently Stanford recalled the bad WUs that plagued me for a while)

If you're curious:

exhaust port external
exhaust port internal (<- A typical 'Sid build'.... fill it up! )

edit: you probably don't want to try the pix on dial-up :p

Nice job on the case mod. I bet Antec wishes they had thought of it. Have two Sonatas myself.

Me, I just take the side (or door) off and lay it aside.................... :p, sometimes both sides.............

BTW my XP boxes are doing two SMP clients just fine now. I think Stanford finally recalled the bad WUs............... Drove me crazy for a while because I thought it was me......................

I am surprised Antec didn't come up with something better than that horrible plastic ducting to cool these off. Mine (ducts... not the cases) are happily taking up space at a landfill.

But I do love the look and the 'workability' of Antec cases.

I have a very stupid cat that screamed when it put it's paw in the HSF fan, so I had to do the fan thing to allow me to close up the cases.

It's worse than having a toddler in the house.

Folding and case mods?

Can this thread get any better ?!?!?!?!

btw, the mod looks great Scott

I am too cheap to buy new tools so I end up tracing around a cd and dremel'ing it out

What did it used to run at?

Without the additional ventilation, I was seeing mid and upper 70's (crunching GPU2)

The CPU went from mid 60's to mid 50's (crunching SMP)

I know all the posts say the NVidia GPUs are beloved patriot dory up to 80 or 90C, but that wasn't my experience. Even though the video card was not compromised in any permanent way, I did get sporatic EUEs when I got over 74 or 75C. I repeated this more than once before I began to ignore the posts in favor of fahmon. ;)

I hear ya! :) Temps of the Nvidia cards run real well at 65c(ish). I like doing case mods from time to time. I had a few in my day. Looks real nice there Sid, Also, you like spending the time to make the cables neat and tidy.

Um... about that cat, this one seems familiar, hmmm. Oh I know why, I have one that likes putting his "paw" in places where it doesn't belong???

Just so you know Sid, That made me . Pretty funny since I made a visual of it....

This should be renamed to new GPU WU, since there are new GPU WU for NVIDIA folders. All you need is the -advmethods flag on.

A rose by any other name.......... :p

-Sid

PS: the -advmethods flag has no affect on the GPU2 client

Don't know if I posted this on the forums before but I had to do some modding to get my current folding/HTPC/gaming rig put together:

Before

After

I had to mount the hdd vertically near the front of the case :D

It seems to work pretty well, but it is a real pain working inside the case with it there.

I like the imagination.... NICE

What drove that change? Were your 3 1/2" bays full?

I like the way you've kept the innerds wide open to let the air move

The case is a Silverstone TJ08. With a large style cooler mounted, there isn't enough room to install hdd's in the 3.5" bays like this:

Pic

This case is the exact same chassis, but has it's front panel manufactured by Coolermaster (and is much cheaper) :D It runs coole enough that I can fold it 24/7 without a cpu fan

I did a little gasp when I saw that monster of a cooler in the first pix.

I tried to run fanless on my HSF (before the extra exhaust fan) and didn't get away with it unless I gave up the OC, one of the video cards and put the Vcore in the basement. :(

Never could avoid the choice between fast or quiet... I chose FAST :)

I've tried to overclock the the q6600, but it just seems to get too hot at 3000-3200 MHz. I know there is a huge thread on the p5e-vm over at [ H ]ard forums, but I just don't have the time. It also seems to achieve about the same ppd with or without the oc (shrugs). The other folder just doesn't have any oc options in the bios :disgust:

Seems like the smart money is in gpu's (as far as ppd anyways) so I am pestering the wife about a new video card

I have to agree with you Sid as for choosing FAST. I had to set most of my fans at higher Rpm to keep the temps within range. Oh, I can hear them but it isn't all that bad. I have to remember that I am getting older and my hearing must be going...:)
