It's been a long time since I ran Folding @ Home. I decided to try it out again to see how well my new HAF-X case delt with the heat. Upon loading the GPU clients on my three GTX 580s I noticed that the fans spun up very quickly. The projects I have are two P7621s and one P7620. It has my top two GPUs running at 93C and the bottom at 90C. At first I thought it was the new case, but now I'm thinking it's the project. I guess one upside to P7620 and P7621 is the very low CPU usage. It's currently showing less than 1% usage for each one.

Tripped the protection circuit on my Corsair AX1200. PC simply shut off. First time it's happened thanks to these new projects.

Welcome back AdamK47 :)

Seems like maybe you won't be able to run all three GTX 580s.

Are you getting enough air flow thru the case? What temps do you have if you take the side of the case off?

The side panel on is actually better considering it has a 200mm fan on it. The cards were running hotter, but it wasn't that that caused the PC to automatically shut off. I believe the protection circuitry in the AX1200 was tripped due to over-current.

There's also no apparent damage. The protection circuit did it's job. When the PC shut off, I had a feeling it was due to this.

With previous projects, the top and bottom GPUs would stay at ~90C and the bottom at mid to upper 80s in my older case (Antec 1200). These are the auto fan profile ramp up temps. It could run them 24/7 with no problems.

My house was built in the 60s. Usually when I run something extremely GPU intentive the lights in my house dim and flicker. It was dimming and flickering more than usual with P7620 and P7621. I was thinking to myself when running them, "Uh oh, this can't be good."

 Get an electrician!

Yeah yeah, I know. My wife complains about it whenever she is trying to read a book and I have something running. I need to get a dedicated line directly to the outlet my PC is on. The weired thing though is that my PC is on the bedroom circuit, but I'm able to dim the lights on other circuits in the house.

Decided to try out some other settings. Changed the GPU clocks from 850MHz to 800MHz on all three cards. The voltages are lowered from 1.1V to 1.05V. Changed the CPU clock from 4.2GHz to 4.0GHz with the voltage lowered from 1.375V to 1.30V. Temps are good and the power supply seems to be dealing with it much better. All three GPUs are folding as well as the CPU. It has been running for ~1 hour now.

I figured out the problem. The AX1200 wasn't getting enough air when mounted with the fan pointed down. The over temperature sensor tripped the protection circuit and shut the PC down. Flipping it around so that it's pointed up and drawing in air from inside the case works much better.

The GTX 580s still run hot, but at least it's manageable. These units have worked my GPUs harder than anything I've seen before. Some people with SLI are unable to run them. I've been able to run them in 3-way SLI.
