Yes, it's finally coming - the NVIDIA GPU client we have all wanted since first seeing and tasting the power of the ATI GPU Folding@Home client.

Vijay Pande, the man behind the Folding@Home project, was on hand to demonstrate the first showing of the NVIDIA GPU client.

There's no estimated release date, so don't hold your breath yet, but at least it's in progress!

I'm sure there will be all kinds of silly discussions about performance compared to ATI cards. Whatever. All I can think right now is the difference in power draw between their products... thanks, I'll stick to ATI for that alone :/

beat me to it! this is great news, I hope that they come out with it soon. Nvidia's dominant market position will provide a lot more folding for all of us! of course, foxery has a good point in that amd's more efficient power consumption characteristics will be a huge benefit while folding, too...

This is great news (especially for those of us already running Nvidia GPUs). I hope crunching the GPU will yield good results despite it likely needing a core to feed it.

I don't think I'll be spoiling anything by saying the new GPU was incredibly fast and the upcoming GPU will be faster than any Folding client today including the PS3; you will be impressed.

Looks like the wife and I are getting new video cards.

EDIT: Holy cow! I went over to the XS forums to see if they knew about this as I've been doing water cooling research over there, and ya'll need to see their thread, particularly post #7. :Q :Q

Cool!, at long last their will be an Nvidia client! 🙂, soon 😉

Btw ,aren't the 8800s more juicey just because their more powerful?

-Very different architecture
-ATI currently uses a smaller manufacturing process (55nm vs 65nm I believe)
-ATI currently uses newer generation RAM, which has much lower power consumption

This applies to both the products we own right now (late 2007 design) and the new ones coming out this summer.

the 3870 will probably meet/beat an 8800gt in folding, those slides were probably comparing a gtx280 to a 3870. for comparison, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4870 double the output of a 3870.

lol, I just bought two 3870s so they could fold. I would love to get the fleet doing the video thingy and smp. It would be a modest point increase over current production. I have mixed emotions about being in the beta for so long. More folding = more progress = more cures for sickness and aging. I say fold!!

Btw I think I remember rightly now 😉 ,the 8800 GTX will generally be faster than a 3870.Anands review

iirc the additional shaders are very useful in scientific apps. the firegl's are killing nvidia right now for example.
