i didnt use IE for a while (my wife uses it), i use FireFox. I always thought i keep my comp clean and free of spyware/virii etc...

So..what's that i just found after i started IE today out of curiosity ?

Some stupid programs from '180 solutions' and 'internet searchbar', 'web favorites' etc. and others....not only hijacked IE...

it actually deleted/replaced my google toolbar so the google bar was unaccessible and installed itself over it.
With the worst spam i've ever seen in my life....a IE searchbar which only containes favorites/searches to p3nis enlargement, Credit card-sh!te, xxx and other spam. It also totally screwed up my IE layout.

In addition.....it of course set another browser start-page.

It also installed countless running processes and threads and various dlls. It started some processes at windows=-startup.

Etc..etc....for sure the worst case of spam/spyware infiltraton i had uo to this day....

I ran ad-aware and got the latest reference file..and it found a BUNCH of entries and now the sys is clean again.

Kudos to people like the programmers of ad-aware and f***k ya to the spyware distributors and the GLORIOUS idea to overtake the whole system so i come to the benefit of an always accessible quicklink to 'p3nis enlargement' and 'lower my bills'....BARF.....

(Just wonder how i caught that stuff actually.....hmmmm.....)

I refommatted recently and (stupidly) didn't update windows right away. Of course I picked up every piece of spyware and its brother. Twice. Embedded itself in both start up menus (running Win98), the registry, the desktop, and would reinstall itself if I deleted pieces and didn't get everything all at once. I ran AdAware. Found 180 objects. I cleaned it out and deleted stuff. Ran again. Another bunch of objects. Etc. Almost 500 now, but finally all the CRUD is off my computer and I have penitantly updated everything.

I can't understand why people aren't getting their asses sued off for this. I also can't understand why Microsoft isn't being found at least a little bit liable considering there are so many exploitable holes in IE and Windows. If IE put a few options to the user in such as 'completely disable all install on demand, favorites editors, etc, etc', most people wouldn't have such a horrible problem. IE should have options to completely disable popups built right in.

Didn't read your long post that looked boring, but if you have spyware problems just get adaware from download.com

IE isn't the problem entirely,

your wife is spyware incompotent and needs to be educated to click "no" unless it is something genuine.

This is a good reason for forcing clueless people to use Macs when on the internet.

Give your wife an user account with limited access. Don't let her install anything.

Create a user account with limited access for your wife until she learns to not download spyware.

If you have an idiot in the house who's the bigger idiot, them? ...or you for allowing them admin access?

when I first setup the computer for my parents, I just gave them the admin user. After a couple weeks, I had to re-install the machines and now, my parents have both seperate logins where they can't install anything without my permission :D My dad gets pissed sometimes but I don't care, I don't wanna re-install the box every other month.
