F.E.A.R. is a scary game

F.E.A.R. is a much more dramatic and frightening game; Doom 3 is only scary because its so f-in dark and you can't see ****** when it comes at you. FEAR actually has a scary atmosphere and it fvcking kicks ass. I'm playing it for the second time and loving it 😀

Doom3 was more consistantly scary (atmosphere). But FEAR had more memorable scary moments (really just any scripted event where the girl appears). The parts of FEAR where the girl isn't around are basically not scary at all.

Quake4 doesn't try to be scary at all although it has a few surpises and a gross part. Don't go into it expecting to be scared.

atleast 3-4 times while playing D3 - my wife came up behind me and tapped on my shoulder and i have jumped ... heartbeat was like 1000x the normal ... scary ... then again i have not played FEAR ...

Just a pity so many people posting here have never played the original Doom...on 386 or 486 based PC's with 14in or 15in monitors like I did back in 93...now that was a scary game...I still can remember one paticular level "The halls of the damned"...spooky music...and even creepier pitch black hallways that only light up as a fireball travels along them towards you...scary scary stuff...it's just a shame it's so hard to go back and play like that...sure I love Doom but the primitive VGA graphics just look sh!t on larger 17in and 19in monitors, oh well I guess you just had to be there then...that was real gaming😀

I am not sure why people keep dismissing the scariness of Doom 3 due to the "surprise" nature. We are talking video games here people, not movies. In movies like Saw or Seven, you can be afraid from a psychological standpoint (ie F.E.A.R.) because you have two hours to really get a feel for the villain/monster. You don't have that luxury in games. In video games, voices behind you, screams, and *surprises* are what scare you. I agree, the little girl in F.E.A.R. gets my heart pumping sometimes, but when you are in the dark 80% of the time and there are monsters that come out from behind you, in a room you ALREADY CLEARED (Doom), THAT'S scary. It's also very lame of iD to design a game that way. They basically "cheat"

Doom 3 was the scariest before I had encountered all of the different monsters in the game and knew what they sounded like. Once I was able to differentiate the ambient soundtrack from actual monster noises, the game wasn't nearly as scary anymore. Although I must admit those zombies with the long tentacle arms always scared the sh!t out of me, even when I knew what they sounded like. They would always teleport in like 3-4 rooms behind where you were, and moved very fast without making much noise. I would be all alone in a quiet room when all of a sudden one of those things would hit me from behind.

So does the fear come from things just popping out of nowhere or the fact that killing an enemy is hard.
I bring this up because back in the resident evil days the only thing that made the game scary or hard was the freaking controls..I mean Who the fvck stops and shoots?
I'd be running and shooting like a crazy person.

Anyway I have not played the game so I can't make a commenton that..But i still want an answer. Scary because its hard to play? or scary like sh1t poppoing out of nowhere making horrid sounds?.

I remember when I hit the Use key to climb down a ladder in F.E.A.R... As the screen spins 180 degrees and I start to descend down the ladder, the girl walks by scaring the crap out of me! Then, 2 seconds later when I reach the bottom of the ladder, I look to my left and there's this dead dude standing 2 inches from my face! Pants crapped all over again!

Agreed, F.E.A.R is scarier than Doom 3 in a more mental-trauma kinda way.

BTW, anyone tried playing F.E.A.R with in-game music turned off and speakers blasting Ray Parker's Theme to Ghostbusters in repeat mode?
CONCLUSION: NOT scary. At all.

LOL, gonna try it RIGHT now. Hopefully I'll finally beat it as its scared me to the point where I've stopped playing 😀

Which game are you asking about? FEAR? FEAR is scary because it has scripted events within the game that play out like a scary movie with a little girl (think the ring).

Pfft. My nine year old brother has beaten Fear, Doom 3, FarCry, Quake 4, and Half Life 2, but for some reason, he is terrified at the though of playing Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil.

The monsters in Ressurection of Evil are relentless.
