F*cked by a DirectX train

I have a fairly old computer with a Radeon 9800 Pro, an Asus A7N8X-X mb and Athlon XP 3800 processor. I used Windows XP without any service packs and Catalyst 4.9 driver. And this configuration worked fine.

But yesterday I decided to upgrade to Windows XP SP 2, nForce 5.10 mb drivers and Catalyst 7.9 graphic drivers. It all seemed to work fine, until I installed a game. The error that appeared said something about DirectX and CreateDevice (I can't remember the exact wording).

So I ran dxdiag. The Direct Draw test ran fine, but when I clicked the "Test Direct 3D" button I got exactly the same error as when I tried to run the game. I tried reinstalling DirectX, but no luck.

Anyone know what's causing this? Is it a driver problem, or is the 9800 simply too old? Maybe I should try older Catalyst drivers, or perhaps an alternative driver?

Anyone have a clue?

Glad you found the problem. I've personally had to roll back drivers before too with older ATI cards(9600XT to be exact).

Oh, and you were a little more than 'late' with the XP SP2 update. 🙂
