F-22 Pilots being poisoned by their planes

35 million per plane and 44,000 per hour to operate?

HOLY FUCK!!!! D😀😀😀😀😀😀:

I can't believe this is happening with such expensive planes

You seem to be confusing "expensive" with "reliable". Typically for military systems "expensive" is another word for "complicated", the opposite of reliable. The F-22 is currently the most advanced fighter in the world. Because its the most advanced it uses things that haven't been done before, meaning that there is no previous experience with many of the technologies used in it. While they found and corrected many issues with the plane during its development they're going to continue to find more as the plane ages and problems related to age start to appear. As time passes they'll learn and correct the issues, which should make the planes more reliable.

You can't really compare that these planes have to any other fighter in the US fleet because all the others had been flying in some form for 20+ years by the time the F-22 even was introduced. They've had a MUCH longer time to work out issues.

Better get "poisoned" that will reduce your life somewhat, instead of getting shot down in F16/18.

Even if ground defense is good enough to keep USAF out of the air you can bet your ass the US has the same or better ground capabilities, so the introductory comment about US troops not hit with enemy air would remain the case, I should think. Of course, my military analytics experience is limited to video games and being brought up on movies.

Terrible, what major papers are carrying this news? i can't really find it on ones I've heard of...

Maybe because the problem with the oxygen system has been known for months? This is a bit more information about it, but the problem has been known for quite some time.

^I know. It's insane.
Aren't F-22's in the "fire 18 missles at once and shoot down 18 30million dollar aircraft from outside their range without being detected by radar" type of dealio?
No fighter can carry that many AAMs. Most can carry 8-10 max, of which roughly 50-75% of those fired will actually hit something.

Is the U.S still investing into these advanced weapons when they are in so much debt?

They defeated every single fighter in the world in simulations, 100% kill ratio. There is a Sukhoi prototype in Russia that is supposed to give the F-22 a run for its money, but it is not operational yet.

Even more serious -- China's military flexes its muscle

China also announced it is about to launch its first aircraft carrier and is developing an anti-ship missile that can strike from 900 miles away, according to the Pentagon report.
As its military might increases, China has been ramping up confrontations with U.S. allies in the South China Sea and even against U.S. ships in the Yellow Sea.
The South China Sea is a vast area of more than 1 million square miles that may contain sizable amounts of oil and natural gas.
Twice since May, Chinese military boats have cut cables used by Vietnamese ships to conduct seismic tests of the sea bottom, Vietnam officials say. In March, two Chinese ships threatened a Philippine ship exploring for gas, the Philippines government says.
Vietnam and the Philippines say energy-hungry China is harassing their efforts to explore for oil and gas. Last fall a Chinese trawler collided with two Japanese patrol boats near islands in the East China Sea claimed by both countries. And Taiwan has complained to the State Department of veiled threats of invasion as well as China's firing of ballistic missiles over the Taiwan Strait.
The world has taken notice of China's new military posture, according to a poll released July 14 by the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project. The poll found that 15 of 22 nations say China either will replace or already has replaced the United States as the world's leading superpower. Majorities or pluralities in all but four of the nations surveyed say China's increasing military might is a bad thing.
China's Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai warned recently that the accusing nations are "playing with fire" and said he hoped the United States stays out of the fray. China has called for negotiations to resolve the disputes that would not include the United States.

Ok let's not get too excited about the Chinese missile. Reading any defense forum, most people will know that not many anti ship missiles can shoot from that range and score a direct hit. You need to fire a salvo. 4 missiles? 8 missiles? More? That means nothing.

Anyway, if people pay attention, they'll realize that the US' F-15s, F-16s, and F-18s are no match for today's 4.5 generation fighters like the Eurofighter or even Su-35s. The F-22 is badly needed for air superiority. And even then with 187 of them, we can't do THAT much.

This is old news, and one pilot has died probably due to the OBOGS issue (but inconclusive, he crashed). It was due to that crash, and reports of hypoxia symptoms that this became an issue. So far, they have failed to replicate the problem, and they're pointing the cause to starting up the raptors inside hangars in Alaska.

Also, I disagree with buying only 187 F-22's. We need at a minimum, double that amount. We can't rely on aging F-15C airframes. We also can't rely on having F-15E's take over that A-to-A role, but in the future, it may look like that may happen once F-15C airframes just get too old to be operational anymore.

It's also going to cost a hell of a lot more to maintain older F-15C for much less capability.

With China aggressively ramping up military aggression in the S. China Sea against Philippines and Taiwan, we desperately need more fighters, and a larger show of force in the region. We also need to sell new F-16C/D fighters to Taiwan. Taiwan has requested for those fighters repeatedly, yet we won't sell it to them? I'm sick of us trying to bow down to the wishes of China.

Wishful thinking: I wish Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and among others will make a NATO-like alliance to provide a deterrence against a more and more aggressive China, but with the current business/political atmosphere, it's highly unlikely that will happen.
Besides, Korean/Taiwanese/Japanese all hate each other. So stupid that they do.. they're allies, but not allies.

I believe it makes more sense to spend that money in developing better UCAVs than buying more F-22s.

Fraction of the total cost of manned vehicles, all digitally linked to air/ground based radar platforms that can be more powerful than any single fighter radar.
